Tires Rotten tires?

I have several tag-along trailers that I keep parked in the back yard, ready for use. I like to have them that way so even my wife can hook one up when needed, so I don't want to jack the tires off the ground.

The question is....which would be better for the tires, psi treated 2x6 or rubber conv. belting, to protect from ground contact? Or am I thinking too hard? Where's Henro??

George, my personal preference would be for the rubber belting, but I doubt that it'll make any difference in the life of the tires. The thing that ages the tires the most is the UV rays from the sun, so if you're only concerned about making the tires last longer, the best thing you can do is provide some kind of shielding against the sunlight. And if your trailers have "special trailer" tires (labelled with the "ST") they are supposed to be a rubber compound that is more resistant to UV rays than normal car and truck tires.

Michelin suggests using a piece of cardboard, plastic, or plywood for protecting RV tires in storage, so it doesn't sound like the material is all that critical. Tire Guide It seems like the most important thing is to keep the tires dry and away from sunlight and ozone.

I don't think it matters much, more important to keep them shielded for direct sun.Also I belive HENRO is still on vacation.

I have read that both UV and ozone are not "rubber friendly". Sources listed for the production of ozone include electric motors that have brushes.

We had a set of tires that deteriorated severely on a car that rarely ever saw the light of day, literally. It spent about 5 years in the garage, and the only time it got wet was when I pulled it outside to wash it. The tires had lots of tread left, but the sidewalls were cracked, and they "thumped" as they went down the road.................chim
