I was wondering what the right size trailer would be to haul a Kubota L3240, with loader, filled tires, and 6ft rotary cutter?

My guess is the weight would be around 6400lbs?

I was thinking maybe a 20ft, 5ft dovetail, deckover, 12K gooseneck would be about the right size?

That sounds like It would be an excellent choice, what manufacture do you have in mind? Too bad that Crosley trailer in Starke, fl. has been bought out by All Pro trailers
I have an original Crosley and It Is built great, I have a 25' deck over

Other posters have had problems with some cheap imported axles and hubs. It would be worth checking any trailer you are considering to see if you have a potential problem under the frame.

Make sure to use bearing buddies if the hubs can accept them and keep them greased well no matter what you buy.

Your suggestion of a 12K trailer sounds safe. An empty trailer and 6400# of cargo will run 10K. Having that 2,000# cushion is very smart. Using a 10K trailer would be living too dangerously for my blood.

I looked at the dealer list and we have one in town here. Are you going to get a regular deck or a deck over ? mine is 8'6" wide, I like that part , I have pictures of mine in my gallery
trailer pictures here
Is there much of a price dif with 12K and 14K ? Would be a good idea to check out both

I am probably going with the deck over, also want 2 jacks, ramps that fold flat, and maybe spring assisted ramps.

I will probably look into both 12K and 14K, and also want to make sure that the 20' deck length will be enough for the tractor, loader, and bush hog..... without hanging into the dovetail.

I had read your post before when you restored your trailer and you did a great job!

Why would need 2 jacks ? mine has one in the front and I thought you were getting a 20+5, your talking a 20' total, get the 20+5, It will cost you more one time and you will love it for balancing your load properly
Mine was bought new as a 16' and paid extra for the other 9 feet and restore goes a long way when all I did was wire brush the loose paint and grind rust and brush RustOleum primer and then I sprayed 2 coats of their gloss black, I still have to check the wheel bearings and brakes on both axles
:)

I would look at what you may haul in the future? Get the biggest trailer you can so you will only have to buy it once. So many of us have bought what we needed and a year later we are trading it in. Also consider what implements you may want to haul with your tractor and then what it will take to balance the load.

My plan was to get the 20+5, along with the 2 jacks which I think can provide better stability when the trailer is unhooked.

I plan on trading in or selling my 16' tandem tag-along before I trade up for the new trailer.

I think you would do so much better selling your trailer outright than trading it in, you must have a craigslist near you, free with 4 pictures
go for it

I was just looking at the specs for your trailer If I have the correct one and I have torsion axles and I also have a 8" frame and 8 lug wheels, from looking at the specs it is less? Am I correct?
spec sheet here

Thanks! They build a great trailer and are the ones that built my 16' tag-along.

I like your idea of craigs list...... probably the closest one around here is going to be Panama City, or Dothan.

Probably a lot of overkill, but what the heck, right?;)

I pulled a L-35, then an L-39 (8,000lbs) on a 12K bumper pull (not a goose) trailer with ease behind an F-350, so if you want to go lighter, you'll have no issues. Might leave your bed open for more tools, cargo, etc.

Thanks Builder, I haven't decided just yet on whether to go with a 12K or 14K.... they will build whatever I choose, but it will be a goose for sure.

My 97, F250, Long Bed Power Stroke shouldn't have a problem with this load.

Stu,

I'll stand alone here and suggest the lighter trailer for a couple reasons. Your truck proabably has a MAX GCWR of 20K (maybe less, better check). If you are pulling the heavier 14K trailer and you are pulled over, you must make sure your truck weighs no more than 6K or you will be ticketed for being in excess of your trucks max 20K GCWR.

Since your truck probably weighs more like 7-8K with fuel, passengers, hitch, tools, etc. the 12K trailer will allow you to have a truck that weighs 8K without exceeding your max GCWR.

Best to check your GCWR and your empty weight before you buy a trailer. ;)

If you get a goose, then you need the 12k. If you get a bumper pull, they weigh less so you could get a 10k. AND probably have more load capacity.

You do need 20' if you want all of the cutter to be in the 20. But that puts the bucket up against the stop in the front.

I use an 18' bumper pull to haul an L3410 with FEL and cutter. The wheel is off on the back by about 2'. No big deal. It has slide out ramps no conflicts.

You probably know the pros / cons of goosenecks. Better turning, easier backing and all that. But you loose all the capacity of the bed. Sort of sucks at times - only real drawback.

Thanks JB!

I thought about getting another bumper pull but thought for the amount of weight I want to haul that a bumper pull would need a wd hitch, and I felt a goose would probably put the weight over the axle..... always tradeoff's of some kind.

What size cutter do you have? I will be getting a 6' cutter and hope that the tractor, loader, and 6' cutter can all sit on a 20' deck. If some of the cutter hang over the dovetail section then I may have to reconsider the fold-over ramps.
