YES.....3"..... high or low i(ie. max point blank range of 3".) When sighted in for max point blank range....as shown in the table which I referenced. In most cases....this requires a sight-in at about 2" high at 200 yards and the correct bullets. I stand by my statement. :D:D

Then I suspect we'll just have to agree to disagree. :)

First question I have, would be, is it legal to make a 400 yard shot at a deer with a firearm from a tractor? Surely you guys wouldn't be talking about it if this weren't the case. After all, this is a tractor forumn...
Just for the record, I am a gunnut and people shooting deer with AR-15 in .223 aren't my favorite kind of hunters. I don't do a lot of long range hunting, but have taken a few shots at objects that are further than my abilities. I shot for years with a .243 at deer in the southern most part of Georgia (Florida deer sized) but that won't work for you. My current project (which may never get finished!) is a bolt action that might do the trick, but is too rough on the meat of the downed animal. I have a 7mm magnum that I wouldn't use, but mainly because of it's brutal kick. The gun weighs about as much as a Ruger 10/22, or at least seems that way when you pull the trigger. Like another poster, I purchased it from the winner of a raffle ticket who knew it would kick like a mule. I have thought about adding weight to the stock and seeing if my machine capabilities extend far enough to add a muzzle break to the barrel. The o/p might consider this, as recoil seemed to be one of the things he was concerned about. However, with a muzzle break, you do trade off recoil for increased noise and muzzle blast being aimed at the shooter.
Going to go play on my John Deere,

Like so many of the others I would recommend Practice, Practice, Practice, a range finder could be very useful and as an avid handloader I would strongly recommend it with the caution. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!! You might also check in your area for a range that hosts silhouette matches as they shoot regularly out to 500 meters, Practice, Practice, Practice. You may not wish to take part in the competition but often ranges that host have permanent gong targets for use by members to practice.

Are you oftentimes proven wrong.....or just on this issue? ;):D Notice the difference in the chart you provided (200 yard "0" ) vs. a 2" high sight-in (as in the reference chart to which I referred) to provide the max point blank range. Big difference in max point blank range when you use the higher sight in.

LOL......I just need to have the final say on this issue......'cause I'm right.

Freehand shot at moving target at 200 yards will either of you be able to tell the difference!:D

At least out here, it is illegal to shoot from a vehicle. Pretty sure a tractor would be considered a "vehicle".

I am not a fan of 222/223/224 caliber for deer. But, a buddy of mine made two clean shots a couple years ago; two shots, two deer. Heck, I have never seen more than one buck in California. Much less two. He had two tags. Two bucks came over a ridge. Bang, bang. Two deer, two shots in just a few seconds, and two deer dead. About 100 yards with a 222 Remington, in a bolt action.

In regards to the AR-15, I think it is unfair to to just count them out. The AR platform has really evolved. In some area's it is legal to hunt with a 0.224" bullet ie 222, 223. The other thing, is over just the last few years, other cartridges have evolved for that platform. The 30AR, 6.8 Grendel, 6.5SPC, and some others. The Grendel is even used in 1000 yard match.

Although it is not my platform of choice, I see no difference in hunting with an AR, as compared to a Browning BAR, or Remington 740/742. Those are nice rifles, available in a number of calibers, even 223.

I would not though, myself, go hunt with an AR carbine 11.5" barrel with suppressor and collapsing stock. Nor, more than the legal 5 round magazine. I'm not big in to dumping a full magazine in to a deer either.

But, an AR in 30AR or 6.5SPC, 20" full float barrel with a flattop and a scope, and a 5 round mag. Well, that would match anything you could find in 243 or 308. For accuracy and range.

For now though, I'll stick with my old Savage 99 lever. Best deer gun ever made. .300 Savage, a fine, fine cartridge(and forerunner of the 308).

You are right when you cherry pick the equipment.

Which means your usually wrong unless people use what you use

But to make you feel better.....

Foggy is right......When he can cherry pick the gear, exclude half the common deer rounds in the world and choose the bullet to use.

But why should I fight this fight?

http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm

Even Chuck Hawks doesnt list the 308 as having a MBPR of 300. In fact your almost 50 yards short if your sending 180 grainers downrange.

But I wont let that get in the way.
