Replacing altenator-new question

Couple of questions...
1st...I was told that the battery terminal cables might need to be replaced...could they be the source of short?

2nd... The new alternator is an externally regulated one and the instructions suggest that I replace the voltage regulator...what is that, where is it located, and how do I replace it?

No, battery cables could not cause a short unless the positive cable is going to ground. That would be a huge short. Follow the wires back from the alternator. A set of wires will lead you to the voltage regulator. The easiest way to find a short is to disconnect the positive cable from the battery. Put a 12 volt test light between the battery post and the cable. If the lamp glows you have a short. The brighter it is the bigger the short. Start pulling fuses or disconnecting wires one at a time until the lamp no longer is on. This will find what component/ wire or switch might be shorted. Check all the obvious first like bare wires and switches in the on position.
