I have a John Deere 5105 and believe I am having trouble bleeding the fuel system.

Here is a link to a picture of the seal from inside the hand priming pump located near the engine. This seal should be acting like a one way valve.

It looks to me that 'deformed' area of the seal is keeping it from acting as a 'one way' valve when the hand plunger is pushed.

THAT seal is about $80. I could spend that,,.. but gosh, $80 for a 1 1/4" rubber seal?.. man..

So, the QUESTION, Do you think an inline bulb fuel primer would work? Those are available for $20 (for diesel use)...

I would leave the existing 'pump' in place, as it houses a filter, and I would place the bulb primer just 'upstream' of this pump, which actually just becomes the filter housing/mount when that seal/valve is removed.

I am not a veteran diesel guy - so, this could be a dumb question...

Put the seal in a freezer bag & set in warm/hot water & see if you form it after it heat's up.

I'm experiencing some trouble with my 5105 holding its prime and have rebuilt the priming pump. For the $80 you should receive all of the parts needed to completely rebuild the pump. This didn't help me but its one less thing to worry about.
Remember, when bleeding one of these the fuel tank must be full. They're gravity feed and won't prime on a partial tank.

If it was my tractor I'd speed that $80 on an electric fuel pump instead of a $80 seal. To correct fuel bleed back one could also install a fuel line check valve similar to one in photo.

UPDATE:

I went ahead and replaced the bad seal/prime pump.

The pump now 'firms up' as it should... However, after several "pumping sessions" - NO START.. not even the slightest kick.. DARN.

It's odd that the tractor ran fine when I was last on it..

Injectors must not be letting fuel by huh?

Back to the drawing board..

Doesn't sound much like an injector problem. More likely they're just not GETTING any fuel. Could be you'd have been better served with that electric pump than trying to resurrect a worthless primer pump.

One good way to prime a system is to pressurize the tank. I have a large rubber stopper with a hole in the center that I can press down on the fill hole and blow air into the tank.

Recently went through a shutting off problem with my backhoe. Debris had lodged in a banjo fitting going into the sediment bowl. Turned out I had a rusty tank.

Start at the tank and work forward looking for a restriction or trash.

What did you do about the rusty tank? replace it, or clean it some way ?? just curious.

It just had surface rust in the bottom. I drained the tank and put a few gallons of 50% vinegar and water mix and let it sit a couple of days. Then I pressure washed inside, drained, and dried it with a heat gun. After that I replaced the feed and return hoses and added an inline filter to monitor and prevent future blocking of the expensive parts. Had to replace that filter after a month but it's a lot cheaper and easier than cleaning the whole system and buying that big filter. The filter I added cost less than $4. Hopefully a few of those will catch what couldn't be removed in the cleaning process.
