Kind of simple and obvious but might be useful for newbies, when something, root, rock is stuck in tiller, use long pipe or crow bar to rotate tiller in direction that it will get the thing out.

Take tiller out of gear so it CAN rotate and of course with engine off, use pry bar against tiller shaft and tines to rotate tiller in direction you way.

Mike I keep a 5 lb hammer and a prybar on board just for that when I'm tilling

Unhook it from the PTO and it will rotate more freely.

The worst thing I ever got stuck in the tiller was a 4 foot long piece of 5/8 inch re-bar. It wrapped around the shaft twice. So now I have added a hacksaw and extra blades to the tool box.
