Red Dyed Diesel

A huge local dairy & milk processor had just replaced their back up gen sets and had a full 10,000 gallon diesel tank. The Gen set installer said the fuel cannot be over a year old and this fuel was. They had to give 10,000 gallons away or void the gen sets warranty.
They couldn't give it away, as its a county owned asset; so they had to spend money to get the tanks emptied.

So, I work for a private company, working with a Lot of government folks, and generally at/out of a government office. During hurricanes, if there is Absolutely no way to buy regular gas, we have been allowed to get from the gov fuel pumps, for work on their projects; but its a pain, they have to account for all of it, pay the agency back, and then send the road tax as a special tax payment for any used.

Edit: thats in the work vehicle engaged in the work, not personal vehicles or such, figured that was obvious, but maybe not

Only speaking around here; county/state/bigger towns typically buy clear diesel, as they are exempt from the tax anyways. The red offers no advantage. They all have their own pumps, and have then filled by the typical, major, fuel dealers, not a local "fuel" supplier, that a farm or contractor work with

Maybe they are only exempt from the state portion, and not the federal? Reason I say this, maybe it was gov politics, legal, or stubborness; but uncle in law was maintenance supervisor for a county school board, and they have large generator tanks (like 10,000 gallons worth) and his diesel wasnt getting burned, but he need to replace with fresh. He tried to give it to the bus garage, who refused, and he had to pay an environmental company to come empty his generator tanks, and dispose of it, so he could get fresh diesel. Maybe it has to do with fed road tax? Maybe it was a paper work issue, maybe they were worried about dirty tanks, IDK
At the hospital we had 2 Cat generators with 8,000-gallon tanks. Cat came in regularly and serviced our generator fuel tanks. They tested the fuel, spent the day polishing the fuel using a large trailer mounted system, plus added any additives that were needed. Never had an issue with fuel going bad in the 10 years I did emergency management.

I was going to mention fuel polishing.

At the marina the shop has lots of free fuel and actually gets paid to take it when emptying boat fuel tanks…

The owner circulates it through a series of filters which also removes moisture…

He would then mix 50/50 new/polished for the yard crane, forklifts and his diesel trucks…

Just bought red yesterday for $3.099 in Missouri ... I added a dose of HotShot Winter Defense, and only half a dose of there LX4 LUBRICITY EXTREME as the WD already has some in it ...

I've been driving a over the road truck for 33 years, been "DOT Inspection" MANY Times, never had a tank checked, nor most of the time even lifted my hood to look at the clear fuel filter ...

Hello,
I would like to know if Red dyed diesel will cause any engine or fuel line troubles. I purchased the 2023 Branson 2515H new and have been using clear On road(taxable) diesel from the start. I have recently been approved for a Red dyed diesel permit here in Texas. Off road use only. I have been running the clear On road diesel since the purchase in 2023. I was told by the supplier that it wouldn't harm anything but just wanted to post and see anyone's opinion on this. Thank you. Jim
Over 500 hours and running great-
File IRS form 4136 with your federal tax return and reclaim the taxes that were paid unnecessarily.
I end up doing that because it’s more convenient for me to drive around the block to get pump gas then to arrange for red dye deliveries

My previous company used to get on-road diesel delivered for our stationary diesel generators. We filed a form to get the off- road pricing, after the fact

A fellow farmer in my area got all 10,000 gallons free. He just had to pay fee to drain the gen tanks transporting fees to his farm.
