Rear tire chains on 3520

Are chains a good fit on the '10 3520 rear R4 tires? Do they clear the fenders safely? We don't get alot of snow in a normal winter here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland but after last year's 3 big storms I want to be prepared for the worst.

Hi,

We use chains on a 3320 with the stock smaller R4s and wheels set at their widest & the chains clear the fenders with no problem.

The chains have a side to side (ladder type) chain every 4 links on the circular inner and outer chains. They are available every 2 links but the 4 link works fine for us & is quite heavy.

Although JD says they are not needed I added the spring loaded tightener (spider) to take out some of the slack in them.

The front chains also from JD are cross chain every 2 links and need the tightener to keep from "walking" out of the chains.

They will pit your concrete drive or garage floor but on the ice we get in the notheast they are needed.

We got our chains from the JD dealer but I think that they got them at Tire Chains by TireChains.com which is where I got our spiders.

I doubt you'll see enough snow to justify chains. Also, the Eastern Shore areas I'm familar with are pretty flat (little sloping).
Tirechains.com recommends a minimum of 2.5" clearance before installing the chains. Use your hand or a tape measurer to see what you have.
If you don't have adequate clearance, I'd suggest swapping those rear tires side to side (if the wheel offset allows it) before installing spacers.
The 3x20 series machines (with R-4's) I've looked at appeared to have plenty of clearance as delivered, BTW.
