Massey Ferguson 1735M
Hello,
I'm looking at a massey fergusion 1735M with 13.6x24 ag tires and wondering what size R14 might fit. Tractor data list different options but do they all use the same 24 inch rim?

Tractordata lists:
- 12.4x24 AG --> 320/85R24
- 13.6.x24 AG --> 340/85R24
- 17.5L-24 R4

Can't find a good explanation the first number. One site says it is the thickness of the tire from the ground to the rim. Other says it's the width.

thanks

12.4x24 is a 12.4 inch wide tire on a 24 inch rim;
320/85R24 is a 320 mm wide tire with a sidewall height that is 85% as tall as the width on a 24 inch rim.
So 320 mm wide with a sidewall that is 272 mm high on a 24 inch rim.

Im not familiar with metric sizes but a 17.5 x 24 has a far wider rim vs a 13.6 x 24.

I talked to a dealer and they said 14.9-24 would the same rim as a 13.6x24. I found both tires using 12" rims. Are 12" rims pretty much standard for 13.6.x24 tire? I found some Goodyear R14s in a 14.9-24 size that call for a 12" rim.

Best thing to do, is to go to the manufacturer website of both types of tires you're comparing, find the specs and more often than not, they will list what width rims will work for a given tire size.

Depending on the tire, it may even list 2 or 3 different rim widths.

- 17.5L-24 = 460/70LR24

It's simple. Both numbers are wheel numbers. They tell you the size wheel that tire fits best and is the wheel size the manufacturer used when making all the other measurements like distance from the ground and rolling circumference and diameter.

The first number you are asking about is the width from the inside surface of the wheel rim to the opposite inside face.
If you use a wheel with the proper dimensions, then all the rest of the manufacturer's measurements will match their specs.

Obviously, you can put a tire on a little wider or thinner width wheel - but then all the other tire specs will change as well.

Not sure I understand what you are saying? None of the numbers he posted tells you the rim width. Lou did a great job of explaining the numbers posted.

Most important number is the RCI (rolling circumference index) of each tire. If you are changing from an R1 of any size to an R14 you need to be concerned about the RCI. If the R14 doesn't have the same or very close to the same RCI you will be changing the gear ratio of that axle. This can cause serious binding issues.

Here's an old RCI chart I've had for several years. It gives you the RCI for your R1 tire. But R14s weren't in use when it was created.

Google search an updated chart.

Tire Calc helps you figure out circumference. Many others on line.
