The 1700 has three pto positions: 1-2-&3. Which position is which speed? I've been running all of my equipment in position two, which is where the dealer placed the lever, but I'm thinking that position 2 is 748 rpm. Isn't position #1 for 540 rpm?

On my FX24D positon 1 is for 540. Mine has a tach which shows BOTH engine & PTO speeds; therefore, I know that you can have 540 in any position depending on engine speed. Ofcourse, the difference is how much power the PTO has.

Not absolutely sure, but I believe it's 588 - 730 - 1260 @ 2200 RPM. And yes the first position is lowest for approx 540 rpm pto speed. Mark

I have a 1500...and don't have my manual in front of me...but here it goes anyway.

I believe your 3 positions are as follows. 1 is for 540 PTO RPM at "full" engine speed. 2 is for 1000 PTO RPM at full engine speed. And 3 is the same as engine speed---so if your engine is at 2000 RPM so is your PTO in the "3" position. Almost all USA rear PTO/three-point implements are to be used at 540 RPM only. Running your brush hog or US rototiller at 100 RPM could do damage to people and equipment. Many mid-mount mowers may run off a mid PTO at 1000 though.

Hope this helps and I hope I did not get the numbers in backwards order!!??!....simply looking at the PTO whould tell you which postion it runs slowest at (540).

As far as I know.. 1 is 540 or close.. 2 is 768 or 7xx.. and 3 is 10xx
