I'm a new pto pump owner and hope to use it to power the woodsplitter I own, and I'd like some advice from those who have worked with these things.

Due to clearance issues I bought a shaft extender for the rear pto. The width of the pump body is about 5 inches or so but the shaft only penetrates about 3 inches. Other than the obvious inadequacy issues that the tractor is experiencing...is this a problem? Will this arrangement cause problems for either the shaft or the pump?

Also, the pump has a retaining chain to use to keep the pump from working its way off the shaft. What is the best way to attach this? Straight up or angled toward the front of the tractor?

What about rotation of the pump? Will the chain deal with this or should I attach a piece of flat stock to the pump bracket?

I have a Prince PTO pump for use on 3 different tractors. Each tractor has its own special fab'd bracket to hold it on and contain the torque. If you go this route make sure there is play in the bracket in all directions. Not much but a little so nothing will bind up. Depending on the tractor mine just goes on with a pin through the lower top link adjustment hole.

The chain is to keep the pump from turning. I would attach it straight up or sideways from the pump. You should have some sort of a locking device to keep the pump firmly on the pto shaft. The pto pump for my backhoe has a pin I push in to install or remove the pump on the shaft.

I just have a the chain loop under the drawbar for my PTO roller pump. Simple and effective.

wkpoor - your bracket will deal with both rotation and keeping the pump from dropping off the shaft, but this is a longer term project for me.

kennyd - the chain in your photo looks pretty taut. Do you worry about binding or bearing wear? Also, does that pump lock on to the shaft? My Prince pump does not and I'm worried that if my restraining chain loosens too much the pump may work its way off.

All - the pump body (through hole) is about 5.5 inches deep. Am I OK if the pto shaft only extends about half way through...provided I come up with a way to keep the pump from working off?

That is just the picture, the chain is not taut at all. And yes. my pump locks onto the PTO stub with a coupler like THIS

I don't quite understand what you mean? That bracket makes pump removal a snap but could be on the permanent to. I have 3 brackets for the pump. Each one is custom for the tractor it goes on. That way I can put on or off easily and securely.

Your set-up seems ideal and I wish a could weld because I'd make one, too. A bracket like that takes all the worry ot of it.

I'm still messing with my set-up and have taken off my pto shield and bought a short extender. I'll make the chain work somehow and come up with something to make myself feel better about the pump slipping off.
