PTO operating while off the tractor

MY Massy GC1715 requires me to be in seat... I actually put ZIP tie around seat switch and since tractor is "dumb" it thinks I'm still on seat....
A stragically placed paper clip does the same thing.

In my case, the logging winch and backhoe. Formerly also a wood splitter, hopefully a wood chipper in the future.
Yet as I mentioned before, I disabled my seat switch because I got tired of it shutting the tractor down every time I turn in the seat to watch the mower, tiller, plow or disc harrow.
Add a PTO water pump, PTO generator, PTO buzzsaw, etc. All cases where the tractor is a stationary motor to power something.

Back in the eighties I had an Uncle who did some repairs to his round baler. The next morning he took it out to the field to start baling straw. after a few minutes he wanted to check everything was working and the belts were running straight, the only way was to leave it running and walk around to observe. Everything was good so he walks back to the tractor, as he is walking back he notices a little tuff of straw that didn't feed properly so it was now a fire hazard. So he grabs the tuff, next thing he knows his shoulder is braced up against the front of the baler, his hand is inside it and there is a 4 inch rubber roller that feeds the baler is burning into his forearm with several 100 lbs of pressure. After pondering what to do he decides the only option is to take off his steel toed work boot, shove it into the roller which would open the roller so he could get his arm out. Problem was that when he pulled back on his arm it was so burnt from the roller that the rest of his arm just broke off. So his hand was inside and he was just standing with the stump of his arm above his elbow.

So I would have to say, yes there are reasons to get off the tractor with the PTO running but when you do please be very very careful.

generally, sub compacts & subs have an operators presence switch that requires being seated for pto operation
on utility & more serious agri tractors, operator presence is generally not required to have pto engaged (maybe some audible alarms tho) & i would not recommend bypassing a safety switch if you have one. regards

The simple solution I've used for years on several tractors is a bungee cord to hold the seat down when I want the PTO to keep operating when I leave the seat. I keep several bungees strapped to the brush guard in front and the roll over bars in the back - they come in handy for lots of things like keeping the top link up and out of the way when not in use.

don't know on that one, safety precautions are there for a reason on consumer compacts & subs. same way on zero turns, etc.

pto use on agril utility machinery while operator is off seat is another matter, realizing it's commercial agri use, not home owner grade equip..... regards

Not it.
The ppl making these decisions, are more concentrative on litigation and has nothing to do with the concern of safety.
Anyway of mitigating the aspect of factory “negligence”, governs this mindset.
Good catch! I forgot about the nanny society.

It should be covered in your operator's manual. If you don't have one it would be a good idea to get it. You probably can download it for free.
I hate to say this to you jstpassin but I had to double read your post. I have had to pay big for any type manual for mt stuff. Even just service manuals. Repair manuals almost out of reach. If you are serious please provide me the source. I need manuals on a d5 m caterpillar now
