The steepest I have slope I have gone up with my PT was 35° (based on the slope gauge) and it was no problem but it was not wet grass. I have never tried anything steeper.

I still want to see that PT. go up a 1 to 1 slope or 45 degrees as you call it. A little BS. I sure been on a lot of them and you need tracks under you..... jim

I didn't say I drive my PT425 up a 45 degree slope. I said:

"I frequently push my PT425 brush cutter 6' up a more than 45 degree gravel bank in front of the tractor and it doesn't dig in. It rolls right up the embankment with the FEL arms in float."

I never found that the case, I cut a 1to1 but idid it backwards by having the mower in the air and ran the PT up the bank and let the mower down and cut backwards. It would no way push it up the bank, but I'm doing it off the shoulder of the road. It was a PITA. going up a 2to1 but I have topsoil that is 1 to 2 feet thick ..... jim

At our property, I had to cut into the side of a road bank to put in our driveway from the highway. On both sides of the cut there are high banks. One is about 7-8 feet high, the other only 4 feet high, both a tad over 45 degrees. I face them with the brush cutter in float, and drive forward. The brush cutter rolls right up the banks and I drive as far forward as it takes to get the cutter near the top of the bank. Then I back out, move over, and cut up again. I could never back up those slopes. The machine wouldn't have the traction, as it's too steep.

I drive up the slope with the mower in the air and set it down and back up and it cuts going backwards. it will not push the mower forward and up the slope of 1 to 1..... jim

I have one or two sections that get me up to around 40 degrees but I do these sideways. I guess my steepest climb is no more than 35 degrees for 60ft or so.

I didn't know you had a PT 425? Lets do apples to apples, My Ventrac 4500P will mow up down side ways on a 2 to 1and little steeper but not a 1to1. You better have a wide track D6..... jim

A 2:1 slope is a 26 degree angle. The PT425 with a Kohler will only do a 25 degree angle due to the oiling system in the engine. Don't know the limitations of a PT4255 with a Robin engine. He's got an 1850, which is rated considerably higher.

I push the rough cut up a bank, much like Moss describes, except i have a fence at the top, that stops me. Thick grass and blackberry bushes. It's a short slope, say 15 up to 20 feet. I run out of traction in some of the steepest parts and will sometime lift the mower. I don't believe i would mow it if it were any longer, what with loss of traction and engine lubrication possibly being a problem.

Is there an average (hour or years) as to the life of the primary pump(s) wheel drives or attachment motors? Are they rebuildable? Average costs? I love the simplicity of these machines but I cringe at the possible costs for wear and tear items. I知 not getting one for commercial uses and I would prefer a used unit even though I might be buying someone else痴 money pit.
Thanks for all the information

Yes , I know this and most do not know what degree a slope is and sure don't have the machine to run on it let a lone run the implment on it. The Ventrac 4500 P is rated 30 degrees up down or side ways .... and I had it near a 1 to 1 and never had a loss of oil pressure but it was intermittent or short times and a pucker job... lol... jim

I don't think an average can be put on it, as there are so many different operating conditions when you try and compare between users.

Add into that equation maintenance/care. Here is a challenge for you, what is wrong with this picture (besides the color) of this PT that was for sale at some point and looks freshly washed?

Here is a hint, hydraulic reservoir breather caps are not optional.

How long was it that way and what would it do to the life of the hydraulic system?

Yikes. I wouldn’t buy it. Not worth the risk.

I remain impressed with what users do with their machines.

All the best,

Peter

Any chance there is a PT member with a 425 or smaller machine in the Western New York are? I would love to see one and see if my wife could/would handle it. Anything larger than the 425 would probably scare her off. Thanks!

These tractors do not feel anything like a traditional tractor. My 65 HP feels much smaller than the 25 and 45 HP CUTs I have owned in the past.

When I got my 1845 the wife said she was not running it to mow that it was too big compared to our 422. But after she used it she wanted nothing to do with using the 422 to mow, she loves the 1845 now but she very seldom gets to use it as my grandson loves it to mow with and he comes around all the time with grass needs mowed or some other use for it.
