I knew I was letting that big old 400# black bear live in the cedars for a reason /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That 4 wheeler just dissapeared /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Never ever saw them. What 4 wheelers ?

Add in a few idiotic folks with jet skis and you've just about got the group covered. Dang near ran over one these fools this summer. Not real smart for a jet ski jockey to play "chicken" with a bass boat.

Hey Fella's,

Not all ATV owners are causing the problem. I have a ATV and so do the kids.

I respect and they respect the property of others.

I can say the same with the sled people of 15 years ago. I can say the same with the Horse people that think a few road apples on the street is sweet. (I also feel that way)

And, I can say the same about all the SUV drivers that have "Save the Environment" plates on their gas eaters.

I agree 100% on keeping idiots at bay but don't beat up on ATV owners as a group.

My thoughts are: I wish I had this machine I have today but 35 years ago before there were enough to cause problems because of the present day popularity.

What fun that would be.

Besides, most sled owners also own ATV's. Admit it folks.

Respectfully,

Tom

Sorry Tom, you're right it's the operator, not the machine. Didn't mean to imply all are a problem.

Here's a sad story from our local news tonite. Be careful.

Tom, I think overall were referring to Tresspassers, not just those on ATV's. I have guys with ATV's drive my roads all the time. Most of them are other land owners so no problems. In fact the only break ins and tresspassers we have had have been from snowmobilers and dirt bikers so its certainly the individual and not the type of ride they choose. I still dont see the ATV attraction, I just put my tractor in 4wd High and tool down the rd /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Dave

I am a NY ATVer. I belong to an adults only club. I was told that whenever we are sharing the trail with horses that we should stop and remove our helmets, so that the horse can see that we are people? Any horse owners comment on this.

I don't know what our horses think, but it is a very nice jester
on your clubs part.

Seems you all are very responsible and your attention to detail is great.

Junkman,

I had a thought the other day which happens from time to time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can you plant some pine trees in and around the logging trails?
NC sells pine seedlings cheap. Something like $20 for 250.
Could you put up some large "temp" barriers to give the trees
some time to grow. After a few years you have a living fence.

We are kinda sorta doing this on our land. Not so much
because of trespassers but for sound and visual barriers in
case of future development on our boundtries.

Food for thought.

Dieselsmoke Im with you on the idiot jet skiers here. I was helping my friend drive pilings with his work barge. The barge looks like a floating pile of scrap iron that is 8 feet wide 30 feet long with a 32 foot tall pile driving mast with a man lift. As soon as you get up in the air trying to weld every one on the river wants to run past. the rocking starts a little and then gets worse. pretty soon your trying to weld a little each time you swing by lol. I agre its the owners that cause alot of problems. 2 times this week ive had to take the ditch because of a group of kids let loose on 4 wheelers. Theres about 6 in the group I was turning in tonight and thay came over the hill in both lanes.
I spoke with one of the riders parents and got told to mind my own gd business. I figure Ill get sued when they come around a blind spot and run into a car or the county trucks.
Ill hate it for whoever gets it first but i gues thats what happens when you get to run wild. I got in some trouble last year I have a factory pickup disc for my Farmall Cub THat i have an adapter tounge for my neighbors 4 wheeler. I caught these two boys hooking it to their 4 wheelr then I chunked them with a big dirt clod and some thine metal i happened to grab. THe disc came off whele they were running. I had to get the back hoe and bring it back. They said they just found it there but you could see where they had drug it out of my implement line.

While the temptation is there to really show these young whipper snappers...the reality is we were all kids and did dumb stuff at one time or another.

Not to mention the fact that if the law didn't get you afterwards, your conscience would.

I had a farmer string a cable across the trail on me one time when my friend and I were riding dirt bikes. He let us go past before he strung it, knowing we would be back thru.

Fortunately I saw it just in time to lay my bike down and slide under it and my friend had time to stop once he saw me. We went to great measures for a long time afterwards to make sure this guy knew we were aware of what he did.

Therefore, the best solution may be to put up some security company signs with reference to video surveillence and mount a couple of 'dummy' cameras where these guys can see them when they go by. Or, just sit along side the trail with a video camera and take some pics.

Most people do not want to be taped doing something illegal.

I would really try to talk to them first though, without chasing them first. We had some young radicals that constantly ticked people off by going to fast thru the neighborhood. I approached them one day and asked them if they knew anyone who might be interested in doing some odd jobs for cash. They bit!

I got to know them better, had a chance to talk to them, and what do you know, problem was totally eliminated.

Good Luck!

Brush piles and gates (without a connecting fence) will only deter those who are not determined to get through. I know of one gate in particular that is not connected to a fence. It blocks the entrance to some of my uncle's and others' land. The gate keeps vehicular traffic out but there is a well defined four wheeler trail around the gate.

Ditto for brush piles. A sensible person will realize that the brush was put there to keep them out but not so if the offenders want to ride the road on the other side bad enough. Point in case: A couple of winters ago there was a bad ice storm in Ark. that messed up a lot of the four wheeler trails across the road from my Uncle's place. I rode on the trails that were still open but turned around at all the trails that had fallen timber, brush and vines across them. My eighteen year old nephew showed me in short order that the fallen brush would not stop a "real" ATV enthusiast and proceeded to blaze a trail around all of the roadblocks. It never crossed my mind to blaze through vines and undergrowth to continue on my intended path, but leave it to a kid to open my eyes to other possiblities!

I do a lot of wheelin. Fences and brush piles are usually a task we love. We wheel up north in an area where loggers are. You want to talk about something tearing up the land follow the loggers. The loggers will build brush piles and other deterants on public property and private property that we have permission to be on but they don't like us around there with our wheelers.

Wheelin

A bunch of you have seen this link already but if you chek out the wheelin link you will see some of where we go. Under the wheelin link you will see a bunch of dates but also check out hte whoops movie at the bottom
