Problems after Norton Removal

I wonder if any of you people have had problems AFTER the deletion of Norton. Once it's deleted, if there are still problems, would you first have to reinstall it and then delete it again through the Control Panel or would you delete it in some other way? What a horrible program!

I am planning on removing mine through the control panel/remove programs, I think thats the safest way. I got two new computers and the 60 day trial of Norton expires in 15 more days, then I'm going with AVG or Avast free, not sure which one yet. Norton is also a resource hog I've noticed.

Thank you for the links. I don't know if they will work after half of Norton is deleted. It's not on my system, thank heaven. No Norton program would ever be on my system if they paid me. That's got to be the world's most hellish program to remove.

I always advise people to stick with Webroot INTERNET SECURITY Essentials, or Kaspersky INTERNET SECURITY Essentials (not just the virus program but the SECURITY ESSENTIALS versions which cost about $20 more unless you can find them on sale.

For free ones (not nearly as good protection but you can buy better from these same companies) I like
Avast (the talking anti-virus program) and
AVG.

I have a computer tech friend who fixes everyone's computers and he recommends A-Viro first and Comodo. I haven't tried the latter but thought the Avast was so cute. Should've bought the full INTERNET SECURITY PROTECTION from them. Maybe I'll try it next year.

The key reason I bought Webroot Internete Security Essentials is because it not only has built-in Firewall and Internet Protection but also a cleaner, and the fewer programs I have to use for all of these functions, the fewer conflicts I'll get. This one seems to do it all. I've only been using it for a month but I do like it. (3-Computer Version)

I am beginning to think that Norton is the root of all evil.

I have been getting these pop-up windows telling me that my virus protection has found a virus, but it has always been on the E: drive, my second hard drive. It makes a recommendation that you 'scan' for the source of the virus, so last night I decided to do that. It went right through C:, finding nothing, then on to E:, supposedly working in a folder called E:_Restore\TEMP. After three hours of toiling in this folder, finding some 150+ problems, it appeared to be unfinished, so I left it running and went to bed.

This morning, it was still running, having found some 750 viruses, worms, etc., still plugging away in that same folder, giving no indication of being finished, and now I noticed in the list that it had found at least two on C: even though it finished C: last night.

I decided to kill it, because if it can't do it's business in over 12 hours, it never will. Also, everything was slowed waaaaaayyyyyy down, like the processor was swamped. When I try to kill it via the button on the program screen, guess what? It hangs, just like the removal of Norton did when I tried to remove it from the ME system and I have to kill it with Task Manager.

Decide to re-boot. Shut down system, reboot.....to a black screen. Only way I can restart is through the Recovery Console of XP.

NO MORE NORTON ANYTHING FOR ME.

I'm just reading this old message again. Yeah, Norton and the black or blue screen of death. Can't believe how little has changed since your post!

Yes...Norton goes everywhere and it will fight with other anti-virus softwares...There is a utility to completely remove it..When i get a minute, i'll try to find it for you. Norton is a pretty good software, but once you have it, you own it.

i used Norton for years, because it came free when you purchased turbotax at staples: but last year i went with webroot, same reason, an removed Norton with a couple clicks: no problems what so ever...i did mess things up later when i tried to install one program from a list of programs on a norton disk: i wanted to use norton ghost, an tried to install it but not the rest of the stuff on the disk: that caused me some real heartburn till i finally removed it this week.

Years ago I put Norton on two computers I had. Didn't learn after the first time. My computers both times operated slowing after it was installed and after I removed Norton the computer worked fine. It was a bit of a pain to get rid of it as well.

maybe its a difference in the operating system: i did have trouble getting rid of norton on a windows system prior to xp: but with xp it was just a few clicks an it was gone.

maybe it ain't as easy as i thought it was: or maybe even easier?? i thought i had removed norton from my desktop computer: but decided to go to the norton removal site an see what happens: don't really know if it did anything or not, but it spent several minutes going thru its gyrations before saying all norton products were removed from the computer: i really can't tell any difference now, so i don't know if the few clicks i had done before really removed all of norton or not? but for them to have a "norton removal site" tells me i probably didn't have it all removed.
