Does your tractor skip along, or make crunching sounds ?

Why dont you drain the fluid and fish around with a long magnet inside.
You might find broken gear teeth, ect... pray its not the ring & pinion in the rear end.

while youre at it clean the hydraulic filter screen inside.

Its worth a try.

I just reread your post again, Imho I think you need a new ring & pinion.

I have driven a few with broken r&p gears during repairs here and it sure sounds like that when backing up.
