I have a YM122 (like the YM146, but 1cyl) that I'm working to resurrect. It is running very well but the Powershift system seems off. From what I read I should be able to select a range between my legs, then use the column shift to go between R, N, 1 and 2 without using the clutch. When I try that the gears grind - so I don't try it :) If I use the clutch it shifts fine and has lots of power. I changed the transmission fluid (using the JD spec fluid). Where do I start? Is the mechanism that controls the shifts located inside the transmission? I haven't found anything on the linkage.

Thanks for the help.

I am not familiar with that one but only 1-2 upshift can be done w/o clutch. From neutral into 1 or R could be done w/o clutch as long as main box is in a low low gear on what I am familiar with.

For instance- like taking off with a tiller or mower attached and need it spinning before moving the machine. Otherwise there will be a jolt rather than a grind so thats kind of confusing the title is anyway? My powershift trans has a noticeable whine in it as long as the clutch is out fwtw.

I can't go from 1-2 either if that helps any. I don't notice any particular whine or whurr, like I'd get with a hydraulic pump under load. The pump for the blade lift makes that noise when under load, as expected.

Are you sure its a powershift?

I suppose that I don't. I assume based on the hydraulic transmission, as well as the info I found on the web (which is scarce).

Thanks,

That's great, I'll take a look. This is actually a YM122, but it looks like it's in the same category. YM122, YM146, YM12, etc.

So based on that manual (for the YM12) this doesn't have powershift. From what I can see the transmissions are the same externally. The way to tell is to check for a filter screen. I'm going to assume that it doesn't have it and drive it as I should, with the clutch. For anyone who happens to see this while looking to buy my YM122 in the future, I only tried each gear once, and it still functions just as it did before.

looking at the manual the YM12 and 14 run the same transmission, it is powershift. mine makes no noises as such when shifting. you cannot move the range shifter on the fly, only the powershift-1-2-R and onward. low rpms are OK with no clutch, but higher rpm snaps it into gear so go easy on that. you need to stop, put it in neutral on P/S, move range lever to desired range and away you go using powershift on steering column. i am trying to find my manual on CD to email you with but have not located it yet.

Ok. Does your YM14 have any external indication that it is a powershift? How about in the path between the shifter and the transmission?
