Poor man's side by side

The thing about welding the rear is she's armstrong steering, so I'm very hesitant to do anything that might make it harder then it is... I suppose if I found a 2nd set of spider gears I could always go back.
How about a poor man's locker for the poor man's side by side! :D :thumbsup:

LOL, never seen that one!

Came home from work early thinking I'd start on the rear body... but dug out the groover and saw what I could do to make these tires work better.

Before;

After;

Turf tires anyone?! LOL Pics don't do the change justice... it's easily 3x more agressive.

For anyone who's not firmiliar to groovers;

It's just like a big soldering iron, with a blade on the end

Here's the buisness end;

First tire took about 45min. The rest should go a fair bit faster.

Here, I think this shows better

A quick check shows 4/32s before and 8/32s after. :)

That might be just enough to keep you from getting stuck. :thumbsup:

Looks a whole lot better!!

Wow! let's see the new vid tomorrow of you driving up a snowy cliff, eh?

Didn't realize how bald those suckers were. Any concerns about digging 4/32 deeper into the remaining tire meat?

No cliff today, but with snow coming, whipping doughnuts on the cul-de-sac is a very real posibility. :)

I am a little concerned... I hit cords once on each tire...we'll see. I'll plug or slime as needed.

It's not so much the depth, but the extra biteing edges that are nice and square as opposed to rounded that's gonna make a big difference (hopefully).

Finished the tires... took two cuts in between the outter lugs

Probably enough there to fill four or five med Tims cups :)

Thought I'd show the angle of the dangle because the other pics didn't really show it

Those tires do indeed look like turf tires now :)

Looks a lot like the welding I did on my "plow tracker" also added a cement block rack in the rear so we could fill the rear all the way up.

Nice side by side NS! I didnt know you could buy turf tires that size.:laughing: Keep up the great work!

I think you'll get lots better traction, but the tires will be seriously susceptible to flats. With such thin rubber in the grooves, any stick or sharp rock out there is a puncture, or rupture, waiting to happen.

That may be, but they were toast anyway... and I won't be going any farther then a km away from my house. I can always carry an air pig, plugs, and jack.

I'm in with a couple of the local offroad shops... I may put feelers out for a set of used mud terrains.

Started on the rear body... starting with a piece of 2x2X1/8 all the way across the back tapered 45deg on the ends with some 6X1/8" flat plate on that

Cut out the rust

... and spent some time filling in what was missing

Thanks AaronS!

Got two hours to pick away at my "practice" project. LOL

Capped the ends and preped the plates

Burned the plates to the square tube (after test fitting and tacking)

Re-installed

First piece in... I think I realy got it in the upper middle. A5 on the mig, overlaping spot welds. Their's a fraction of a second between spot welds that I can see the seam.

Cleaned up

Next piece

...and last. Don't look at the giant blob of shameful weld in the corner. LOL
