Life just got interesting. One of my neighbors has started to build a pole barn with no permit.

It gets better. Area is 200 x 100 and involves protected wetlands.

And the beat goes on.

If he is zoned Ag exclusive (in Dane County, WI) he doesn't need a permit if the building is for farm use. The wetlands, on the other hand can be handled by a simple call to the DNR :)

you always have to wonder.... just how do you know? 1) he has no permit, 2) this area is protected wetlands?

My county does not know what a permit is !! Building, sewer, septic... NOTHING REQUIRED. Also, no contrators license required. No inspections. I went to the Court house when I wanted to build, asked for a Building permit, there was not even a Building Department or inspectors office. The tax acessor knows what goes on, it was accesed on my taxes!!!

In my county here in California, if you build a barn without a permit and are caught, all they do is assess you the permit fee; $400 no matter what the size. Most people don't bother until they go to sell the place.

Paradise!!!!!

thats the way it is in macoupin county IL were i live.

They only implemented septic tank permits like 10 years ago because the EPA got on them for not keeping track of what was being put in.

THen they decided it seemed silly to have a septic permit without a building permit, as they figured, if your putting in a septic system, your likely building something else.

but the "building permit" is issued by the same peeps that keep track of the septic permits. There is no building dept, no building inspectors, no electrical inspectors, no plumbing inspectors, nothing.

I went down to the City offices and

1) Asked if any permits in the neighborhood.
Answer: None

2) Wetlands? Easy :)

Answer: Looked at the wetlands map for the area.

In my neighborhood, it takes a permit to sneeze.

Permit to re roof a house, to install a fence, you name it, a permit is required.

DNR is trumped by local laws in Wisconsin.

Must be 50 feet from any wetlands. Can disrupt within 30, but must build no closer than 50 feet.

I think this guy is toast.

I am guessing they will make him tear it down and pay a BIG fine. And restore the wetlands. It is going to be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

And to poor salt in the wound, they will make him apply for permits (thousands of dollars) and then deny them.

:) Permission from someone to whom you pay their salary to do something to property you own and pay taxes on.:)

Land of the free, home of the brave , if you have the right permit (read: pay the taxes). But, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Think how much more enjoyable it could be with a few million fewer bureaucrats.

In NY you need a permit to remove your old hot water tank and put in a new one. How's that for big brothers reach?

Is that two permits, one to remove and one to install?

Thats such BS, If your water heater implodes Friday evening, you'd have to wait until Monday to install the new one?

With my apologies to Blazing Saddles:

"Permits, we don't need no stinking Permits":D

Just be sure to tell the assesors office of "improvements" so they can tax you. They do get a little cranky when you don't.

Each year we get a notice with our property taxes stating that it is illegal to build or add on to a house without a permit. If you are caught building without a permit the fine is $100. Hardly an incentive to rush out and get a permit to finish your basement or build a pole barn.
