Propane/oxy is good. Its alot cheaper than Acet. , but its cooler so you need more preheat.

I own my tanks and when I need a refill I take them inand they exchange them.

I bought one from (please don't flame) from Harbor Frieght for around $800 and have used it for over a year fairly regular. I haven't had any problems with it at all. It's 40 amps and have used it to cut upto 3/8 without any problems. So far I have only used (using) the first tip. I"ve used it my shop have used it at some friends homes it seems to be pretty rugged. Maybe I've been lucky but I wouldn't hesitate to get another one if I need to.

You can use it to heat and cut, but you have to install a propane tip, which is recessed.

On our tanks locally, they won't exchange personally owned tanks. We have different lease progams. Mine, the best I found, is a lifetime lease for around $250.00. It's a one-time fee to cover recertification etc. If you ever give up your lease, they pay you 80% of the original cost back. (Sounds like a guaranteed customer base is established this way).

Do they hit you with a "rental" fee on the tanks? My BIL turned his in since he was getting charged over a hundred per year for tank rental. Don't know if its just our area, but the welding supply places won't fill tanks that you own for "safety" reasons, so you have no choice but to rent their tanks.

I bought them from Airgas which sells the gas, so I don't have a rental fee. There is a $10.95 annual owner inspection fee.

Did you purchase the tanks from the people that does the exchange?

I have tanks from Praxair, and I bet no one else will refill them, but Praxis will exchange them for me. I also have an account there.
