Picked up a new drill press

That's a nice (but scary) little Bobcat!

That's EXACTLY what i was thinking... I kinda want... but it kinda terrifies me that it would kill me too! ;)

Keep it low. The bucket will stop you from rolling forward. And the weight in the bucket kept low will stop it from going backwards. I had a couple moments where I got close to going over backwards, and it was never when I was using it properly.

I'd be worried about my arms being ripped off by the hydraulics. Never operated one, guess if you need hands on the controls, shouldn't be waving to someone while raising or lowering a load. FOCUS

Neat video Jay. Must say that with the way you think things out I'd expect you to have some sort of hoop or tunnel to slide the pipe through to stop that annoying lifting from the drill bit:)

EDIT TO ADD: If you get that lathe, I'll drive down and help you unload it.

Yeah, hands are pretty busy, and if you keep it low, it never comes up to your arms.

I thought about making a hoop for it, but I just pushed through and I finished in half the time i figured it would take me to make one.

if you need anything or advice.

Thank you. I am really curious how old it really is. There's a feature that I'm fairly certain is an automatic up/down for the press, but the shaft is stuck. I haven't had a chance to take it apart yet though. I need more time.

I’d at minimum weld 2 post on the front to protect you from swinging a load into yourself. Maybe if you strictly moved dirt it wouldn’t be awful but that thing is a death trap. It couldn’t be hard to find a roll cage from a forklift or bobcat.

Everything freshly lubed, belts adjusted, table sanded and cleaned, and it's off to the races!

Bobcat is a 1970 M600 I bought for $2500 last year and has been absolute invaluable in my garage build: https://i.imgur.com/CRR8SML.mp4

That drill press is sweet, nice work getting it all ready to rock.

While I agree that the Bobcat is a deathtrap, I absolutely love it. $2500 for the amount of work that it can help you perform is well worth it!

I have to wonder if the electric motor wasn't an after-thought and it was originally designed to be run by a line shaft. It would give reason for the foot pedal to disengage the drive system without turning off the motor, which is what I suspect it does, which would be necessary if it was line shaft driven. They were popular in Massachusetts, and this thing was made there.

I thought it might have been a line shaft machine that was later converted to electric. I took some better pictures today. This thing seems to have come with all the bells and whistles. The plate goes up and down with a half inch drive ratchet and is very solidly mounted. I already lost one drill bit that went down the hole and there's no real easy way to access the inside.
