Pathway/Drainage Project

I am going to put in a pathway from my patio to the pond. It will be about 3 feet wide with an area on each side for flowers etc. I am going to make the walkway out of fieldstone. It will connect at the patio to a similar walkway that is actually a drainage channel, but disguised as decorative in nature.

The problem I am trying to get rid of is that when we get rain, my patio becomes a small water patio, it does not stay long at all, but I dont want it doing it at all. My plan is to blend the 2 together at the patio.

My question for you pros is what kind of base and anchoring do I use for the walkway. I am thinking about a 4 to 5 inch deep dig, couple of inches of rock with dust, then mortar and place the stones in the bed of mortar.

Suggestions please!

This is the area that runs along the patio. This will be dug out, sloped towards the "ditch", but it will intersect with the walkway before heading down to the ditch between me and the neighbor. The cat will not be part of the walkway! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This part of the project will be 4 inch pipe laid in to get the water away from the patio. It will dump into the ditch between me and the neighbor (I dug the ditch for her, she cant say a thing). I figure that with about 8 inches deep, a couple tons of number 53? and a couple of caps with slots to keep animals out, this will drain better than now.
