He told us about the belly mower, he got rid of it to get the pull behind finish mower.

Here are the tire sizes

31x15.5-15 in the rear

23x10.5-12 on the front

So when my dad got on the tractor for the first time he puts the tractor in 3rd gear shifts up to top end on power shift and proceeds to try and go up a pretty steep hill at the side of the house. Tractor starts smoking pretty bad, he gets to the top and back down, gets off and says... "I don't like the way that thing smokes!". I am pretty sure he just lugged it down and that's why it was chugging because I couldn't get it to smoke. I love the floating front end and wasn't aware of that which will help with stability on the hills of our property and also help keep the power to the ground!

Forget doing steep hills in the highest gear. Shift down to maintain full rpm and it will do fine.

I was surprised when I got my YM186D how its torque decreases at lower rpm. My YM240 (YM2000) has great torque at any rpm and the throttle is just for how fast you want to go. The YM186D in contrast seems to have a torque curve like a lawnmower, it lacks that stump-puller torque in the lower half of the rpm range. It obviously is designed to use the Powershift to maintain peak engine rpm.

The guy we bought the tractor from said he tried to keep rpm in the 1800 range when he was finish mowing or working the tractor.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the gravely tiller? I got to thinking about coming up with something to hook it up to the yanmar. Don't even know unit is possible yet but it is just wasting away to nothing beside the shed

Seems to me that 1800 rpm is at the beginning of where these have adequate torque. Well above that, it will pull better and work easier. Ignore the racket.

Isn't that tiller intended for a smaller garden tractor? Is it designed for 540 rpm input? Buying a driveshaft and building a 3-point mount sounds like more trouble than just buying the right tiller.

Edit: I didn't highlight that. I see it points to Ads/random etc. Apparently not a bug, just a 'site feature'.

I'm going to echo California. My 186D is quite doggy below 1800 or so RPM. I would suggest, especially for mowing, running it at full throttle. Use the Powershift to keep the correct groundspeed. You won't hurt the engine running at full load and full RPM, but running it slower and lugging it will cause damage.

If you are looking for a project it may be interesting to check the Gravely tiller. I would suggest finding a model number for the tiller, then trying to figure out what RPM it required. Your Yanmar will have 540 and 1000 RPM speeds. If either of those match the Gravely, then it may be worth pursuing. If not, sell it and put the proceeds toward a proper tiller.

Haha...yeah it is for a small yard tractor. He bought it without any attachments. He has a 16G he uses to mow around his house. The tiller just sits there and I was wandering if it would be worth it. :)

I think the smoke was that he was lugging it, but i think it should still just "drive" up a hill with no implements on it. But if you bog it up it will roll black smoke the whole time. Put that tiller in uncut ground in to hight a gear and you will see what i mean!

And looking at the pics again that you just posted, yea that tractor has 1014 or 2014 hours. The engine and radiator looks to well used to have only 14. And unless he just mounted and dismounted the thing for fun in the shed (which looking at the sheet metel i know it was in a shed or garage its whole life) for funzies its got the hours we say as well. A tip is also he "got rid " of the belly mower. It was probly tore up! With 14 hours he would only have a few years of most mowing at 14 hours if he was telling the truth. Those tire look to have hundreds of hours on the fronts alone from these new pics. Unless he got them used or drove on concret a lot there is many hours on them a lone.. BUT that still is a good tractor at a good price since u got some extras. Change the oil and start using it. Even it the guy said he just changed oil, DO IT anyway. He is already a PROVEN liar!

When I am really working it just before it bogs down my 186d will blow some black smoke. There is a red line on the tach at 2430. That is 540 pto speed and it is in the middle of the power sweet spot. That is where you want to be if you are working the machine. It is different than other diesels that are operated at lower speeds.

Ok, so I just can't do anything right a far as searching. Can someone point me in a general direction in regard to a manual for the 186D?

/ Our "new" 186D #51
Here is a parts manual. http://downloads.pfgaustralia.com.au/intranetwebcache/Parts/PARTS LISTINGS/Yanmar/YM186D.pdf

You can get both the operation manual and service manual from Hoyes. Thinking they have them on cd or paper. I imagine other parts vendors will sell them also.

Here is an ebay listing. Yanmar YM186 Operation Manual | eBay

Here is an Amazon listing. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/YANMAR-YM186-Dsl-Service-Manual/dp/B005CQ1RU4]Amazon.com: YANMAR YM186 Dsl ..(FO) SVC Service (SVC) Manual: Everything Else[/ame]

I'm still wondering why Gary wanted to know the tire sizes.

So the first purchase was a 5' finish mower. A couple things I noticed and have questions on....

1.) PTO speed should be at 540, when I push the clutch in after it is engaged I hear a clicking noise. Is this normal? If not what is causing it? If need be I will try an video it happening and see how well you can hear it.

2.) when going up the hill at the side of the house I did notice a little oil smoke....nothing major just enough I could smell it.

3.) was anyone else scared crapless the first time the front end came off the ground on the side of a hill in the middle of a turn??? Holy moly, just rode it out, learned pretty quick without suitcase weights on to turn widely!

4.) oil capacity and type?? Still workin on gettin the owners manual
I can't post the link to ************.com but the site says 3.4 qts??

Here is the mower

The clicking is the internal over-running clutch. That's normal.

White smoke or black under load?

I run Delo 400 in all of my tractors including my Cummins powered tow vehicle. I believe the capacity is 3.4 quarts but I'm away from my manuals right now.

Thanks Gypsyman, was wandering about the clicking!

As far as the smoke it's not white and not dark grey/black either but it smells like the engine is burning oil, it's a lighter grey color. Can barely see it, now when we spun the mower up the first time at 1000rpms, it was really chugging but it was more blueish grey.

I will seccond the internal over-run clutch on the ticking noise.

Sounds like oil-burning from the engine. Probly going by the rings a bit. Just run it and check it after a few hours and the day to see if you cna even tell if its burning any. Most likely you wont be able to even tell its brning any each day. May have to add a bit between oil changes but no big deal. I know its a bummer to to as you thought it has 14 hours on it but its the same with buying an older vehicle with the 5 digit odometer. You buy a 1992 truck that says 12000 miles on it your really dont beleive that it only has 12,000 miles you are pretty sure that its 112,000 miles. But anyway it sounds normal and unless its more than a qt every 20 hours or so i would not worry to much about it at all. even a qt every 20 hours is fine just more of a nuicance and you ahve to remember to fill it and check it all the time.

That's the truth about the hours, but after reading the posts in here and getting the tractor home we realized it was more like 1014 hrs.

Just got a 4' hog today so anxious to see how that goes.

/ Our "new" 186D #58
More weight on the front is pretty necessary if you have something on the three point. I have had the front wheels barely touching the ground when hauling trees and had to steer with the brakes but I don't even want to think about trying to turn on a hill with the wheels off the ground. I remember a thread about a deal to let you hang weight lifting plates on the front which you can find cheap at yard sales.

Ive got about 175lbs on the front of my ym2000 tractor adn when i have the disk harrow its still light in the front when its lifted. My 4ft bush hog made it a little lighter without weight but not very much, only was a problem at top speed going over bumps the front would lift a hair maybe, but never when i was just driving it really.

/ Our "new" 186D #60
My YM1700 runs a 4' bushhog just fine. It is similar HP. I think u will be be fine. As others have said run it at at least 2200 RPM it it will be good. It may not have as much torque as a 2 cyl but it should be able to handle it. These are tough little tractors.
