Tractor
Kubota BX1500/L3240
I just received the OK to purchase a Kubota Grand L3240 HST with a FEL from the wife. I drove in a snow storm to sign the paperwork and am waiting for the delivery. Two questions: Is there anything I should know about this tractor that I have not read about? I have a Kubota BX1500 and needed to upgrade as I moved to 10 acres in Iowa which have been neglected a bit. There was a non-operational Ford 8-N on the property along with a three point cutter, blade, pallet forks, post hole digger and roto-tiller. The second question is: the wife now says I owe her big-time...That's not good is it?

Thanks Jay, I didn't think so. I hope that I will be able to get the answers to what I am sure will be many questions about this tractor and the operation of the FEL in the future.

Keep the posts and questions coming :D. We, the members of TBN are all in this together :). I wish there was a TBN 23 years ago when I bought my first tractor, a Ford 1100. I can honestly admit that I had a very steep and accelerated "learning curve" . At times I am still reminded that I still have a lot to learn about tractors, attachments, etc..

I suggest you fill out your profile as well as tell us about your location, property, anticipated tractor tasks, short term and long term "plans", etc. so we can all help you spend your hard earned money . We will also provide you with the "justifications" necessary to help you with attachment acquisition. The "She Who Must Be Obeyed "'s in our lives can make tractor ownership
:( at times ;).

Use your new tractor safely and well- Jay :)

You should rephrase that expression to "My equipment has not met my parameters of expectation" ;) Jay

Well Jay, I can't seem to ever come up with the right response to (What did you do now?) In any case, was there anything you can think of that a new tractor operator should be aware of, other than make sure you know that a bucket is in front of you and take it easy on inclines. I think with the HST I shouldn't have any major problems, just learning to operate the FEL.

Ok, I'll go first and embarass myself. My first tractor, same as yours, pulled it out of the barn the second week to show my nephew, didn't seem to run quite right (brake was on  ) Hard to tell with that HST plus.

Also, don't fall asleep in that comfy suspension seat and run into the minivan. (no, I have not done that - yet). Try explaining that to your SWMBO! Good luck and welcome to the brotherhood!

welcome to the forum and just use your new tractor slow, and you will get the hang of it. As far as owing the wife big time, if it wasn't the tractor it would have been something just part of being married:D

NO NO NO! Tell her the tractor is only injury prevention equipment to safely preform activities that would, without the tractor, cause injury and great soreness. There is no "owing" on safety equipment.

It is no different than air bags in her car.

Oh, by the way If her car does not have airbags it might be time to upgrade her vehicle.

The FEL was the hardest thing for me to get used to. I wont even go into the number of things that i managed to modify the appearance of when I was going backward and hit something with the front end loader. The worst was a concrete block wall in the foundation of my new 4 car garage. I had just paid to have the wall built and I was spreading crusher dust inside it for the slab. I was backing up and turning it was the last bit of crusher dust I had to level out and I hit the wall with the front end loader knocked about 10 blocks off of the top of the wall.

You had a non running 8n and a bunch of implements on the property. The implements sound great Hopefully if they don't work some grease and maybe new bearings will take care of that. I dont know about where you live but here 8n's are pretty popular you can sell a non running 8n fairly easily. My 8n needed new rings and a new radiator. It would not start and I sold it for 800.00 and that was 15 or so years ago. Have you tried to start it or at least see if it will turn over. You might want to check out some of the posts on here about drive shafts. The ones that worked with the 8n might not work with the new tractor.

You already have a nice assortment of toys for your new toy, explain to the boss that you saved a tremendous amount of money on implements ( blade, forks, tiller, etc.) and you should be praised for your insight and cunning acqusition of said implements, along with a weekend project tractor that is without a doubt a classic example of American knowhow and industrial might.

She may buy it but probably not, worth a shot anyway.

I got a set of pallet forks and have found that they are the handiest thing since...air was invented.

Have fun and go easy.

I'm sure that sooner or later the Boss will want you to do something that will require the use of the tractor. Just say "It's a good thing we bought the tractor. I couldn't have done that job without it." with a wink of course.:D

Welcome to TBN and enjoy your purchase.

Congrats on your new addition.

First thing I would do is get a toothbar for that FEL bucket. Markham Welding is a good one for those. I have one on my Kubota B7510HST/LA302 FEL and it helps a lot. Just don't get too carried away with using your FEL as a bulldozer. It's meant for scooping more than digging. Careful about centering the load while you load the bucket. Your 3240 is powerful and you could bend the FEL arms if you aren't careful.

If the cutter, blade and tiller are 8N implements, they may be a little small for your new baby. If so, you'll probably want to step up in size sometime in the future. The forks and the PHD are probably OK, size-wise.

Can't claim 40 years, only 28, but to my first wife! The move to the new (New being built in 1889) house and acreage was for her..sooooo a little bitty tractor for me is only fair. The dealer called and said that the quick attach they were shipped was the wrong one...soooo Tuesday next week at best....Guess I will have to go to the Home Show and play on the one they are going to have there!

Farmwithjunk: I can relate ;). I have only been in "wedded bliss" for 3 years , I forgot our anniversary this year , and I have been living with her for 28 years before we got married. Thanks for the laugh. Jay :D

Surewhynot: Be sure to remind her that what you are doing is for her "happiness" :p. You can always throw a TBN member under the bus when you have to. Jay :)

Surewhynot, I would imagine it's been snowing in Iowa, putting you into a predicament w/o a tractor.... My dealer sent out an old B7500 for a couple of weeks to passify me, what a great way to make Christmas come sooner! :D

No, Not a lot of snow, I am from Marinette Wisconsin originally so I know snow...that and a few years in Duluth MN, so I learned snow and cold! No the dealer is just going to make me wait, he sold me the BX1500 and now knows I am a return customer...so no special treatment for me I guess. I can't wait for it to get here so I can have some "dumb things I did with my tractor stories" Oh and I am soooo sure I will have some:(
