The curve in the video was interesting. Also, based on the additive package and what product it's used in, the shearing of the oil molecules is a factor. By wearing out the additive package you leave behind the base stock and it wears out even quicker. Hence in some product applications you would want to change to oil more often. We are seeing this especially in the 6 speed Honda Pilot and Ridgeline transmissions. It is a factor. Oil testing shows that the DW-1 wears out and allows more wear to occur (iron content increases). Then as time passes you wear out parts within the transmission UNLESS you change the fluid more frequently. This is the shearing of the additives and then by increasing replacement frequency it keeps wear low. Thin oil vs mechanical application.

I was given the nickel tour of a shop that rebuilt Porsche transaxles. They showed me how Red Line oil broke down into separate semi-solid additives and a thin lubricant. Kept that shop busy. Guess what brand of lubricants I don't use...

Early Ford spec 40 weight non detergent.Yah…….right
Switching to detergent in a motor with decades of non detergent puts the oil pan deposits in suspension and without oil filters problems develop…

Read in one of the hotrod magazines back when the manufacturers first started specifying the very low viscosity oils. The story was that to increase the fuel economy on the dyno, the manufacturers were using sewing machine oil in the engines. The EPA caught one of them, then checked the others. All were running very low viscosity oils. To avoid fines, the manufacturers all said they were planning on switching to the low viscosity oil the next year.
