I checked the oil in my L3940 before starting some work the other day and it was about an inch above the full mark. At my last oil change I filled the engine with the proper amount and seem to recall that it measured just fine on the dip stick. If it was this high I would have drained some out.
This is my first diesel and I'm not sure if too much oil can cause a problem. Should I drain some out or is it ok to leave it high?
I failed to check it after the engine was run (the tractor had been sitting unused for about 5 days when I checked the dip stick) and was wondering if after it ran the level would go back down due to the oil filling the system.
Advice please:eek:

Take some back out till it is right on the mark. Then keep checking it every time you use it. It could be a leak in the anti freeze somewhere and getting in your oil. If it goes back up I would take it in right away and maybe get an oil sample to see if it is getting antifreeze.

Thanks for the advice. I visited my local dealer today (buying a PHD, Landscape Rake and possibly a disc hoe :D ) and he too recommended I drain some out. He also asked if it smelled like fuel or was discolored. Going to my farm tomorrow so I'll check all this.
I hope it was just a brain fart on my part during my last oil change  .
