2007 Mahindra 4530----1972 Massey Ferguson 1100
Just doing a little research about our Green cousins and found this little tidbit on the web. :D

John Deere Equipment Pvt Ltd (5000 Series Tractor manufacturers) Pune, India
Deere & Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I always knew that JD had farmed out some of their manufacturing.

If Mahindra is such an off brand and no one has confidence in the manufacturing capabilities of India. Why is the number 1 in the tractor buisness building an entire line there?

All of the so called mager US brands, JD, Case, New Holland, Massey Fergusen have models made in India, and I believe the US is the only place where Mahindra is given the off brand designation and that to is quickly changing. Mark my words, Mahindra will become a mager player in this US tractor market.

Well, except for a few crusty old holdouts on TBN... ;) ...I believe that it's already changed. Two of my new area Mahindra dealers used to be JD... another used to be M-F I believe. Hard to find either of those "old school" brands in my area anymore. Kubota clearly rules this area... while Kioti and Mahindra appear to be fighting it out for second place. You can still buy blue or lime green if you have enough money... you just have to be willing to travel a ways to get there.

Not even sure what constitutes a real "off-brand" tractor anymore other than the various named Chinese stuff and I suppose some of the very latest entries into the American market.

I wouldn't consider Mahindra to be an off brand, they have manufactured tractors for decades, and have a good product.

What is becoming very impressive about Mahindra is their product line. They have a product selection that gives people a lot of choices, which is something that not all of the top half dozen tractor manufactures has available at this time.

To be fair to JD, you must admit if they want to get any sort of market share in India, they probably need to build it in India. I don't think that is any surprise, but many people do not know that these Indian built John Deeres are also available in the USA. John Deere tractors are built in S. Korea and Japan as well. I would imagine that they have or are developing a China plant as well. It's a world market and manufacturing has a global perspective.

As for Mahindra, 3rd in the world in units sold per year world-wide. I've also heard 4th, but it all depends on how you count things I think. What is a "unit", what HP range, etc. In any event, they are a major player.

Some people that bash Mahindra as an off-brand probably have zero Mahindra dealers in their area. To them, it's like a Belarus or some other orphaned brand. Give them time, they will respect Mahindra.

in my area, just north of OKC, there is excellent familiarity w/ Mahindras. the local mahindra dealer is, from what i understand, the busiest in the state. and it's been that way for a long while. when i tell people i recently purchased a mahindra, they immediately ask about which model. i've never heard anybody refer to mahindra as an "off brand". i think it's as dave, and other, have mentioned, a lot has to do w/ the availability of an established dealer.

Your dealer must be Bill Sutton. He and I have travelled together to India a couple years ago to visit and look at tractors, then recently we went to China to look over the Mahindra China facility. I really enjoy Bill. He's honest and knows his tractors. He has helped put Mahindra on the map.

Dave,

I looked at a "Lenar" brand tractor a while back and noticed something the dealer showed me (while I was bragging on my Mahindra). It had a tag below the dash that said "Mahindra Tractor (China)", or something in those words. My eyes bugged out and my mouth dropped! I was embarassed about bragging! What is Mahindra doing? Where do they stand with this? In my opinion, the tractor felt real good, but its just the fact that it was made in China. With me seeing that, that made me kind of skeptical about Mahindra, Even though I owned one and Would buy another. What is your input on that?

Thanks,
Travis R

Travis, Mahindra owns a lot of manufacturing facilities around the world, including what once was Lenar. Some Lenars were built after Mahindra bought the plant, hence a few out there with Mahindra-China tags on them. It is an opinion of mine, that to remain competitive in the future, most companies will at least have to offer an economy line, and that tractor will likely be built in China. I have been through the Mahindra-China plant and it is very nice. I've tested the pre-production tractors and even have one here now. It is very different than the Lenar. There are a few scattered around being tested. Make no mistake, it isn't a Mitsubishi, but it is a long ways ahead of anything else I have yet to see come from China. Mahindra is a huge company, building cars, trucks, tractors, etc., all around the world. I have to get going now, but if you have more questions, plese do not hesitate to ask.

you are correct sir. i've talked w/ bill a few times, but worked w/ his son justin - actually bought justin's personal tractor. my neighbor also bought his tractor from bill.

Just to add, I recently purchased a 7520 from another Sutton location in Tulsa and very pleased with the dealership and more importantly, the tractor.

Travis,
I have been waiting for Mahindra to release the economy China tractor, because I believe there is a good market for it in my area. I have talked to Mahindra many times about how soon it will be released. I have been told as soon as Mahindra has it meeting Mahindra standards they will release it. I think that says a lot for Mahindra as they have been working with this tractor for a few years to make it right. I know when it is released it will be a Mahindra quality tractor and I'm sure they will not release it until it is.

I don't believe that my original intention was that I believe Mahindra is an Off brand company. I believe just the opposite. I was just trying to point out the fact that if people believe that a product made in India is inferior, than why is JD producing equipment there. And folks this is not just equipment to be sold overseas, this is their ENTIRE 5000 Series line. This is their Utility Tractor line from 45hp to 99hp. I would take a guess to say that this is a large chunk of their US sales.

One other thing that I noticed this morning on the way to work. I traveled thru 4 states (live in Maine, currently working in CT.) They bulk of the equipment used to do the summer highway mowing in these states is JD. Guess what they were all 5000 series.

This poses another question for me. I have done alot of work for several of the states and I know that most of their contracts for work or products require that materials be US made. I wonder how JD or the states are getting around this.

I do not know of any utility size tractor made in the US that would hold up to highway use. The JD 6000 series and New Holland TL line are the ones used over here by the county. The State has Case CX tractors still which were made in England.

My thoughts on this "off brand" issue is that the people calling them off brand tractors do so because of the lack of dealers still. When Mahindra gets a good dealer network established and weeds out the fly by night ones and works with the dealers to put tractors on the lot then they will be accepted just like Kubota. They just need to get their dealer situation taken care of to be taken seriously.

This is not directed at any of the Mahindra dealers on here but from talking to other people and seeing some of the Mahindra dealers it does not look like Mahindra has very high standards as far as some of their dealers go. I know my local dealer is actually the reason some people here won't buy a Mahindra. I wouldn't buy from him but a lawn and garden shop just took on the Mahindra line also so maybe that will help them in this immediate area.

Robert_in_NY. in ME, NH, MA, and CT today I saw all of these states using JD 5400 utility tractors for highway mowing, which is basically an 80hp machine. Also saw a few NH of about the same size.

Also by the way JD's 6000 line you guessed it not made in the US. Germany.

I do agree that Mahindra has to work on their dealers. I guess that I am lucky. I have two good dealers within 30 miles of the house.

I never said the JD 6000 line was. They have always been made in Germany. I said that my county uses JD6000 and New Holland TL series tractors for mowing along the road.

One of the first things about havng any shred of credability would be to get even your most basic facts straight. And so you totally blew that chance.

The ONLY part of the 5000 series Deere's made in India is the 5X03 series. The majority of the 5000 series is made in Augusta Georgia. Never let a little thing like the facts get in the way of a good BS story though, huh?
