Eddie, Just my guess but, it looks to be only from wind blowing spray, and the lake is fresh water. It looks like the farther from the water the less ice.

You are right, I have seen those pictures few years ago with a legend exactly as you say.

I'm trying to figure out how it happens. Is the water coming off the lake from the wind and freezing in everything it comes into contact with?

This is what I'm thinking, but I've never seen water come off a lake that could do something like that.

Is it from freezing rain?

We get that here, but again, nothing that would do anything like those pictures.

That has to be one of those rare weather things that only happens there. I'm guessing it has to do wiht the lake, but I don't understand how. Does anybody know?

PS Thanks for posting the pictures, they are amazing.

Come up to the lighthouses on lake Michigan some time and you'll see the same thing. Or go to Niagra Falls for the Festival of Lights every year around Christmas. Everything around the falls is coated with ice. Very beautiful.
