I just had an 18 = 1 gearbox given to me with the PTO shaft. Gent stated that is is from a portable saw mill?

Give me some ideas for a winter project!!

How about a sand/salt spreader for your driveway. It could double as a fertilizer spreader.

Clean it up for starters and make sure it works properly before investing time and money into making it do useful things down the road.

Hi

These old gear box where used with tractor without the side belt drive to operate machines that needed the long and large belt to run.

You may be able to turn it upside down and make a post hole auger !!!!!!!

Donate it to a museum? Just kidding. It looks pretty old. Is that a breather on top?
18 to 1.... I would hold on to that, doesn't take up much room and it ain't like you can get another at Walmart.
I'm thinkin you should move water with it somehow or another....

I can tell by the chalk marks that you counted the turns to get the 18:1 gear ratio. But it sure does not look like one gear is 18 times the size of the other. Is it a double reduction or worm gear?

18:1, so about 30 rpm at 540 PTO speed.

The drum looks to be about 12" diameter, so about 100 feet per minute, if you were to take a few turns around it with a rope.

Hmmm.

Sounds just about right for the capstan log winch I have been wanting to make.
