Not impressed with Mr. Plow

Just say no to snow.
I have nothing but respect for the people who plow with skill around the clock when the weather goes crazy.
It's those other chowderheads that I pray will shear an axle so they just stop.

I would like to place a snow-ban on my driveway. :laughing: Didn't know there was that option.

I got a friend that works for the city... does a lot of plowing in winter. He talks about all of the people yelling and cursing at him as he drives by. People throw shovels at him all the time. I don't know what they expect him to do? They are probably the same people that complain when the road isn't plowed.

That is right! I got a shovel in the windshield, once. I called the cops. Let them deal with it. I haven't got the time.

I was out plowing in the 'burbs this one day and an old guy....He must have been about 70 had just finished cleaning out the mouth of his driveway and along came I. He knew what was gonna happen and moved well back from the mouth. I did fill him in, but at the end of the road (Now this isn't a huge road and not well traveled) I turned around and went back and pulled all the snow out of his driveway with the one way. I told him that in future to put the majority of the snow on the opposite side of the drive. He offered me $20.oo for doing that. I refused to take it. (That is a lot of money for someone retired in the 1980's) I made the problem and it was up to me to fix it.

These people are my neighbours. One is a retired dumptruck driver. He used to work for Graham Bros. in the '70's. Fixed income, don't you know.
One is on ODSP. she bakes for me as payment.
One is an unemployed truck driver.
And the last one is retired and living off his families money.
The two truck drivers are the ones paying and they keep me in fuel all winter to do all the driveways.
This is a small community and there are lots of people with plows and loaders, so you gotta be careful what you charge.

Traveling around residential columbus the last snow we got, it is very clear why the streets arent plowed. People ignore them no parking signs and park on both sides of the street. Now I dont plow the streets, just passing through, but there were times I had to slow to a crawl, stick my head out the window, and run my plow inches away from the cars just praying I didnt hit one on the other side. Ad my rig and plow isnt as big as the 550's and 650's you typically see plowing the streets.

Also see lots of idiots walking down the streets in the tire tracks cause the walks arent plowed. And then they act like they have the right of way and are in no hurry to get out of the way.:mur: I almost hit one fellow wearing nothing but black/dark clothes on a very poorly lit street at about 2am just walking down the middle of the road. Surly he had to have heard and seen me coming from a ways away. But was in no hurry to move until I slammed on the brakes and almost clipped him as he was getting out of the way.

Some years ago, i saw three plows staggered, plowing slush out of the freeway. The slush was flying 40-50 feet off the side of the road, the rest of use were traveling behind the plows at about 45MPH and this guy comes up on the outside lane and starts to pass the far right plow. He drives right into that slush! I don't know why his window didn't break, but fortunately, the plow driver saw him and slowed way down to let him get out of the path of the flying slush. You guys put up with a lot of uneducated people when your working and i have alot of respect for you guys.:thumbsup:

When plows are traveling in echelon (3 or more staggered) it is against the law up here to even think about passing them. Anybody gets tangled up in my windrow when I am plowing because they tried to pass on the right, too bad, so sad, the only way I will stop is if they hit me. I will slow the speed down for a cop/firetruck/ambulance and give them room to pass only if they have their lights on.

The highway plow trucks are noisy, big time. It isn't necessarily the exhaust, but the noise of the motor, the noise of the plow itself which while weighing about 10,000 lbs and about 3-4,000 lbs for the wing if they run onto hard road like a bare patch with no snow and then there is the VHF radio (which I kept an extension speaker right beside my ear) and the tunes turned up almost full volume. It is pretty hard to even hear yourself think in them. And then there are the long hours, if there is a snow emergency called you can be out there until the snow is all cleaned up. The longest time I was out was back in the 80's....3 days. I started plowing on the Friday afternoon and finished up on the Monday morning. The cop I saw in the coffee shop every night at midnite asked me how I did it. He asked if I was doing speed pills commonly called 'beans or 'goobers'. I told him no, just coffee and donuts. Part of my route and the very last thing I did was the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) station. That is when I saw the cop and he asked how I did it.
For that storm I was actually called out of school on Friday afternoon and went back on the Monday after I secured the plow, (fueled and washed), and wrote an English exam. I went back to school in the 80's to upgrade my grade 8 education. It was a grade 11 English exam.

I've actually had to get those made up in the past, but moving snow is just a necessity for me now, not a job!

In dirty weather I drive at a speed that I feel is safe as long as it is the limit or less. I use 4wd when I need it. I don't care what the other guy does as long as he doesn't involve me. I have watched 'them' fly by me only to find them 5 miles up the road either on the side of it or in the ditch.

Plow guys in my northern Ontario have actually pulled off/slowed down to let me pass... some plow folk are nice...and others treat it like war.
