The battery in my JD x500is not charging. I just charged the batter a week ago and it is dead again and also would a dead battery be the reason why the PTO does not engage?

yes it would

A dead battery causes all sorts of funky things in a small engine. PTO not engaging, or when engaged it causes the engine to run real slow, almost like its running out of gas. Those are the two I see most.

Not sure what motor is in the x500, but most of them small engines have a fuse somewhere, probably 20a, on the charging circuit going from motor to battery. So try to locate a fuse that may be blown and replace it.

With the engine running use a volt meter to check battery volts ,you should have around 13 volts with engine running,if not you have charging problems,

First get a hold of an electrical meter and check voltage of battery UNHOOKED from tractor (after the battery is recharged on bench).

Next step is to check voltage accross terminals while installed and tractor is running. Most non running batteries may show a voltage from 12.3-12.7 volts in my experience. They should jump to arange of 13.2-14 volts when engine is running.

If voltage doesnt increase while running, check alternator

If voltage does increase, id suspect a grounding issue. Something may be grounding out battey and killing charge while parked
