Firstly, I must thank everyone who responded to my earlier query on the machine tending to drift instead of going in a straight line: NH TD5.95 drifts to the right - worse when faster

That particular problem is not so evident when working on a field. As we have only a smallholding, this machine is a bit overkill but it has been brilliant with the large round bales. We have owned it just over a year and I tedded about 10 acres for a neighbour and 5 for us last year without a problem. However, the tedder was a four-rotor one but, some of it due to me being stupid, it is now only two so has been working twice as long!

The first problem happened after about two hours when a STOP symbol appeared and I think a message said stop the machine. It did come up with an error code but I obeyed immediately and when I attempted to start it the code was gone. Oh, and it refused to start. I contacted the dealer I bought it off and explained the situation to the lady fronting the service dept. (By the way, is it standard everywhere else to just get a few months warranty on these silly priced machines??) I explained that when I attempted to restart it, the STOP symbol still appeared and it refused to start. It then came up with another symbol which I have recently discovered means some exhaust problem. I thought there would be a way to recall the errors from the machine's diagnostic memory and it just showed the symbol again.

After waiting for a returned call for about 20 minutes, I thought I would attempt to restart the thing again. To my surprise there was no STOP light but an exclamation mark in amber which means a warning. The display showed the exhaust problem symbol plus the error code 3293. That was not in my manual but the web reckons it means "fuel metering unit: maximum positive deviation of the rail pressure exceeded".

The response from the dealer was that they would get an engineer to contact me when any of them returns as they are all out on calls.

After another half an hour wait and still no engineer scheduled, I tried the machine again and it just started with no warnings or any damn thing! As I am bloody old, I knew this would not go away and, sure enough, there was soon a warning about DPF filter not being regenerated. After another "reboot", that went away and I managed to finish the 5 acre field! As I was heading back, the DPF regen thing kicked in and I just sat there while it did its thing.

I told the dealer lady and she said that many errors are due to the DPF regen not completing so this was a good thing.

Until today.

I tedded the field again, and again I nearly finished when the STOP light happened with an engine symbol in red. I did not have time to stop the machine as the engine stopped immediately.

I waited about thirty seconds and attempted to restart which it did albeit with the warning symbol and the bloody suspect exhaust error! After about 10 seconds they all disappeared.

I suspect I am not alone with this crap. I have obtained the on-call engineer's number in case I need it for moving the bales before the Welsh rain will hit but am I just unlucky? Also, am I correct in assuming that there must be some diagnostic port somewhere? In which case - and some decades doing IT work - I will see if I can obtain a suitable interface.

My profuse apologies for the length of this post!

As ever, if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

And a big thank you for someone like me who thinks that farming is worth doing without actually knowing what it entails.
