Go with a Chevy 2500hd with the Duramax Diesel and Allison transmission. They are great reliable trucks, ride nice and the Duramax with the Allison is a indestructible pair.

That would be my selection. Good fuel economy, good for light and medium towing. I think a diesel is overkill if your doing light to medium towing, you'll never recover the additional costs through fuel economy.JMHO. Good luck and have fun shopping.

F-150 with the Eco Boost. My next choice would be a Tundra today. I would give the Ram 1500 a good look with that 8 speed auto but I am not a fan of the coil spring rear end. GM is not on the radar after the bail outs and the 60% ownership by the government.

Do yourself a favor and check them all out.

I drive a 06 F-350 and a 08 Nissan Titan and both were best in class at the time I bought them in my eyes.

cant say i recommend a diesel for that light duty work. cant say i would recommend anything more than a half ton for what limited work you listed

my recommendation would be toyota trundra. (cause thats my preferred brand)
Seems the F150 ecoboost is getting good reviews. (if you like ford)

Go test drive all the trucks you can with all the options you want/Need, you might find the truck who's looks appeal to you the most has a ride you can stand, or the truck that you like the motor in has a cheap interior, the bottom line is the one who know what you want and need most in a truck is you.

Depends on what you consider "light/medium towing". To me, "light" towing is my 5x10 trailer with my 1,200lb z-turn or my atv hooked behind my truck. Medium towing would be one of my gravity wagons or a smaller double axle spray tank loaded. My Toyota Tacoma with the 4.0 v6 does everything around my farm I need to do and then some. does the same amount of work my previous Z71's did and this doesn't stay in the shop like they did. when you want to drive around, mine gets a consistent 20 mpg. I'm not a fan of AFM(active fuel management) like you'll find on RAM and GM trucks, so if a v8 is what you want, my pick would be an F-150 with the 5.0 or a 5.7 Tundra. If we're talking Diesel, make mine a Cummins, please.

F150 with ecoboost. Hands down for the closest thing to all purpose truck I have found. 40 something k miles and loving it. Pulls the same loads better than the duramax I had. I'm not knocking the duramax though- it was an 04 good truck bad injectors.
I think ford just has a better truck right now. That said everybody will step up their game and things will be interesting. Love or hate the ecoboost hype you can't deny it's capability.

i like mine. 2012 2500 hemi 4x4 with the new 6 speed trans and 3.73. i have not towed with it yet but it feels much better with the new ratios the new trans has. gets the same mpg as my 08 1500 hemi with mds and 3.92 gears. the interior is very nice and the backup camera points right at the ball on my rear hitch. i am always working alone so this should save me tons of time hooking up trailers multiple days a week in the summer.

Not sure whether you need a Tacoma/Frontier (I've owned a Frontier and it was flawless and fun to drive) or a half ton full size p/u. Both Ford and GM are finally coming out with new smaller trucks; the old
ones are dreadful, but I'd wait a year for them. I could never stomach the grey plastic dashes of Toyotas, but the Tundra is a great all around, reliable truck from what I've read.
If you need interior room and a full size truck, the Dodge is known for excellent interiors and their overall quality has seemed to rise in recent years. I've driven the Ecobooost F150 and was very impressed but the door panels seemed like cheap plastic unless you bought a top model. So it might be little things that turn you on or turn you off. A new Chevy or Ford are so good its hard to go wrong with either. If you drive more than 10K a year, the Ecoboost might save you some gas money. But maybe you will like the marvelous sound of a Ford or Chevy small block working hard under the hood.

So many choices. Try to be a little more specific in your towing and hauling needs and this might get narrowed down for you.
What none of us can get yet is a midsize diesel p/u. Mahindra fizzled out and never brought theirs in, to the upset I believe of lots of dealers. GM may soon be coming out with a smaller diesel.
An 8 grand upcharge for diesel is more than most of us can justify, unless we have to pull a six ton trailer or fifth wheel camper.
