Wow! That's right off the dealer show room, unused, right?

It looks in pretty amazing shape. Somebody took great care of it.

All the best,

Peter
Thanks Peter!

I assume your Yanmar has a wire clip or something to hold the clutch open when parked? I've seen plenty of warnings that the clutches will stick if you don't keep them disengaged when parked.

These Yanmars are very well built tractors.

On the Brake pedals there is a Latch to lock them together. But Our Era. 1700/2000 Never seen one. Just A Elec. Switch on the clutch pedal of the BD. I believe.

I think that lever to keep the clutch disengaged while parked, reflects how these rice-paddy tractors were designed so that running half-submerged won't hurt anything. There are also vent tubes that come up to under the seat, from the sealed brake enclosures.

In 2004 I found this photo on Yanmar-Japan's website.

But its rare to see mention of a stuck clutch here.

Such great info so far. Thank you, and keep it coming! Can anyone steer me in the right direction for hopefully an existing write-up on how to typically run this tractor? Meaning, when just driving with no load, can I start out in high range? Already start in low? Again, I'm a total newb to these machines!! Hopefully it's addressed in my manual, but have not rcvd that as of yet, and I want to get to work. 🤣

Start in whatever gear can get moving without too much clutch slipping. Same as a car.

I use hi second to get out of the barn without crashing into things. (Incidentally reverse is the same speed as second gear). Then third to get over rough ground to where I can stop and choose 4th for downhill.

4th is 'road gear' for going somewhere on pavement, or on my smooth easement out to the highway.

But the difference from a car is you have to remain in that same gear until the next full stop. You can't shift these while moving.

Generally hi range is sufficient for anything - until you need low range for heavy pulling or extreme careful maneuvering.

My YM240 (US version YM2000) is nearly identical to your YM1700 so I think my experience applies.

Edit - I sent you a PM.

Should be a Gas pedal on the R. foot rest. Sits just Below the brake pedals. I set my Hand Throttle lever @ around Rpms 900 and drive it Like a 4 speed Manual car. Tractor needs to be stopped also Esp. When shifting gears. 8-900 Rpms and let the clutch out. Mines really smooth that way. I had mine 15yrs and pretty much Stay around 1800-2000 Rpms with the mower attached. 2800 Maxed out I believe. When I did see how high I was @ 2700rpms and plenty of Throttle handle left..

My two cents for new to me machinery is to start out in a low range (not ultra low), and just above idle until I have gotten an hour or two on it. It saves wear and tear on me, the equipment, and buildings. Just saying...other folks may be more coordinated.

All the best,

Peter

Low RPMS when you let the clutch out. Not the Gear it's in.

So if I'm hearing g you all correctly, it will start from a dead stop in any gear, and I modulate speed with the throttle. Am I on the right track?

The Red pedal is your gas pedal Drive it just like a car clutch. BUT You need to be stopped or nearly stopped before shifting Into gears. keeps from Grinding them
