Hi all,

Been lurking on here for a couple years but finally have a reason to post! We recently purchased a new home on 20 acres and I was able to work a deal on a couple new "toys". One of which is the 1070. This thing is a cream puff. it's a '93 and had 280 hours on it when I took possession in September. She now has 304 due to some heavy fall cleanup. All in all it's like a brand new tractor. It has an 80 series loader, 506 rotary cutter and a beat up box scraper that I need to rehab. I've spent some time going over it and while the previous owner took very good care of his stuff there were still some things that needed to be done. Here is what I have done already (or plan to do over the next week or so) and I'd like to hear from others if there is anything else I should do. Here is the process:

- Washed down the entire tractor and coated everything with Fluid Film
- Cleaned the engine, removed all debris from radiator and around the shrouds
- Changed oil and replaced with Wix filters/Amsoil 15W-40 Diesel Syn
- Drained and replaced gear oil in front diff w/ Amsoil 75W-140 Syn gear lube
- Drained hydraulic/tranny system, replaced with Wix filter and Amsoil Syn Hydro fluid
- Drained/flushed cooling system, replaced with Amsoil antifreeze and distilled water 50-50 mix
- Replaced inner/outer air filter with Wix filters
- Replaced fuel and fuel/water separator filters
- Greased all points with Amsoil Molly HD grease
- Treated diesel tank with SeaFoam

So far that's been the protocol. Let me know if I missed anything. Thanks all and I look forward to being quite active on here. My next post will feature my newly installed WR Long hydraulic plow to take care of the 1/4 mile drive :)

Cheers,

Don

Welcome to the JD 1070 club. I bought mine off Craigslist from a guy that was getting divorced. Mine has a ton of hours 5100+ but has yet to let me down. This last winter I had it store at my buddy's place. I went there in April, turned the key and it was running. They are built like a tank! I wish JD still made them this tough.

Great lookin' tractor! Welcome to TBN, Don.

You've got a fine machine to handle all of those 20 acres.

Wow! that sure is nice looking!

Yes indeed DW, you have a fine looking tractor and are a man of obvious intelligence. Since you beat me to the purchase, I guess I should be welcoming myself to Club 1070..? I especially would be happy to hear of anything you have discovered about this tractor. The single thing I can think of -that I don't like- is the reverse/kickout in high gear. It was PITA while I was teaching myself to plow.

I've heard about the transmission "lockout" in high range and reverse. I'd venture that the JD engineer's designed that into the tractor for safety purposes.

Although, my 970 did not have a "lockout" in the transmission - I didn't feel it was a big handicap not being able to back up at 17 mph! B range was more than adequate - IMO.

Welcome to the 1070 Club. (Didn't know there was one, though). This is the perfect sized machine for my outfit: hay making, snow plowing, driveway maintenance, fencing, backup power and landscaping. And it trailers well. too.

Mine does not have a 'reverse/high range lockout' I have reverse in all 3 ranges unless I missed something. Gotta have reverse for snowplowing in high gear. Ops manual shows max reverse speed in 3rd range is about 8 mph.

Been awhile since I ran my 'ol 970... but, only 8mph? So, you can't go as fast in high range/reverse as high range/forward? IIRC - my operator's manual mentioned the unavailability of high range and reverse; although my 970 had reverse in all 3 ranges, too.

Hey guys, thanks for the hearty welcome and kudos! I have to say that I'm quite impressed with this tractor. I'm very familiar with most things landscape related (z's and anything that is has to do with grass) but a compact tractor is a bit of a learning curve. I love a new challenge so this will be a nice project. I have a tendency to dive in 200% when it comes to modding my equipment so stay tuned. I also must concur that mine has the high range reverse lockout as well. I'm thinking about looking at disable it as it seems like that wouldn't be too hard to do. I've got two snows under my belt with plowing and the second range works well. On the long stretch of drive I shift into the third range but it's not really all that necessary. It is, however, a pita when stopping and trying to back into my barn and it drops to neutral. Overall I have to say the tranny is quite smooth for a gear drive. I'd love to have a full hydrostatic setup but I'll take the 1070's build quality over this feature for my current needs anyday.

I also like that we have a small cult following! Long live the 1070 club! Lol :) To be honest, there haven't been any surprises. Its quite straight forward and extremely easy to work on. So have I sorted all the "must do's" to ensure a long life with my 1070? Thanks again and I'm happy to be part of the family.

Duh.... my bad! Of course, it's only gonna travel 8mph - it's in 3rd gear - not 9th! Brain stuck in Hydro. :confused2:

What is "Fluid Film" never heard of it?
Since it's 18 years old, I would put new cores in the valve stems and carefully check any rubber parts, especially hoses.
Very Nice machine, did you get with the property?

Thanks Kenny for posting the link. If you've never tried fluid film you have no idea what you are missing. The stuff blows away any other lubricant/ protectant going. I use it on everything and its made from lanolin so its totally biodegradable. As for the hoses, I checked them all over and they are still in good shape. I did have to replace one this summer due to a pinhole leak from a piece of brush and I purchased a couple extras just in case. I may just replace them all to be safe. I'll also do the valve stems, that is a good idea. I'm planning on swapping the rears to widen the stance and get some additional stability so I'll do this at the same time. I did work a deal in conjunction with the house. Couldn't pass it up when I saw the low hours on it :)

If you have other needs for rear hydraulic connections, I keep 2 extra short hoses on hand that hook up to the 4 loader fittings. Yes it means you disconnect the loader circuit, but you already know how easy it is to remove the loader (don't even have to leave the seat).

For examble: a hydraulic top link for a box blade, tongue and header control for the hay mower, dump for the cement mixer, and of course the angle and lift of the snow plow. You can buy the fittings at TSC.

A rear view mirror straps (via hose clamp) to the exhaust pipe very nicely. I also added some rear work/spot lights for those evening snow and hay collection jobs. I put a switch on one of the lights that fires up both of them separate from the tractor headlights and amber blinkers.

My machine was delivered by a JD ag-line service rep who apparently was familiar with the reverse lockout removal. He also liquid loaded the rear tires which is a big help in winter. Mine needed a battery and cables and also had a problem with the voltage regulator terminals (not the regulator but the things that plug into it). Something got too hot.

My dealer told me to NEVER weld anything when its connected to the tractor (like some of the hay or plow attachments). Its tempting and I've heard all the talks about disconnecting the battery and keeping the ground clamp close to the work, but I've been faithful about that with this machine.

BTW: you missed a small dirt spec on the right rear wheel inside flange just behind the air valve. Otherwise it looks pristine...:D
