So then it looks like the outside posts are cut off and the wall strapping is installed after the rafters are lifted into place. Also any overhang on the edges is scabbed on after being lifted into place. Interesting way of getting the job done. I've seen rafters set up on the ground and lifted into place with a crane but nothing like this before. Definitely thinking outside the box. I like it. You don't need to hire a crane and you also don't need to set up a level form to build on. The more I think about this it's a money saver over time. A picture of the lifting or the strap jacks/truss jacks would be nice.

It was pretty simple, it's just boat winches on top of a metal box sized to fit over the top of the 6x6 post. we had 5 people on ladders and 7 ladders so there was a little monkey business swapping side to side, but that part was done in about an hour.

Yes, the center 3 posts have double trusses, outers are single, I still have to put some boards between the center trusses and some other lumber slinging.

And, not questioning the logic, just trying to understand. What do you think is the gain in doing it this way?

I took a picture of the truss jacks before we used them, it should pain the picture of what they do, they just sit on top of the posts. With enough ladders and people you could crank the whole thing up at once instead of going side to side like we did. On the corners we just wrapped the cable/strap around the truss, on the doubles just used a steel concrete stake between them.

Less ladder work is the gain, I was able to assemble all the perlins on the ground with just a 6' A frame ladder by myself.

Here they frame entire roof on the ground and sheet it, then lift it. All thats left to do is hang metal. You save LOADS of ladder and room climbing/scissor lift work.

Putting the sheeting on then raising that is a big plus. Neat way of doing it. Like it.

Not much progress, last weekend it was nearly 100F both days, almost got a heat stroke by about 1:30 on Saturday even though I drank about a gallon of water... Sunday was overcast and mid 90's so I powered through and drank even more water with breaks, but still only got about 23 boards up... Got the rat runs in and the lateral bracing and T brace on top of the lateral braces as well as the topline girts up then got the door support up for the man door...

I got stung by a wasp on my right hand index finger on Sunday, benedryl took my energy the last couple days and it was around 90... Tonight it's mid 70's but the wind is going about 30mph... I marked for the door supports for both roll up doors tonight. Once I get the framing in for the doors I just need to get the bracing for the gable trusses and it's ready for both roof and siding!

It's supposed to be 70's this weekend, so hopefully I'll get at least the roof done if not the sides too, then time to order more gravel to finish filling the post holes and put a 4" layer under where the slab goes and get ready for a slab!

So, everyone loves pictures...




I was as normal overly optimistic with what I could get done in a weekend... I "thought" I could get the roof and sides done by myself... didn't even get the roof done with a friend! I severely underestimated the time it takes to put in almost 2000 screws... and that it would be nearly 2000 screws just for the roof...

Anyway, just the last row of roof left to put on and the cap and trim! Then onto sides! It did NOT help that it was probably 80% humidity and 85F yesterday...

And I finally attached a picture of the truss jacks.

As of yesterday the roof is complete other than the trim around the fascia and whatever the side ones are called... which means I still have to run a screw every 9" on the fascia boards but no more being on the roof!

Today I was hoping to get some of the siding done but took it slow on other things I've been putting off, T bracing on the bottom chord of the side trusses and on the angles in the middle. Also started on the 2x6's between the paired trusses on the bottom chord, and finished putting the 2x8's around the roll up door holes and put in the last spring block. Still a little bit of work left on the man door hole but it's close.

I bought a couple windows on Friday since I didn't think about adding them before I started... I think I'm going to add in another if I can find a pair to one, there's a place by work that has new unused windows for $5 per square foot that were left over from customer projects...

Mostly tinkering stuff at this point but it's getting close! Once I get the siding on I need to figure out where I'm putting things like the bathroom/utility room and office/loft so I can get the electrical in through the concrete. Then I gotta order and spread I think around 24 yards of gravel and the other tinkery stuff I have planned...

Here's this weekends progress.

This metal siding with insulation takes some time especially alone... That wall took some time, only 4 of the sheets of metal didn't need cut of any sort, two were just a simple corner cutout for the trim, 4 pieces needed cut 3" shorter and 6 were major surgery . That said, the hard wall is done and now I know more... I got one more bay wall covered on the other side since I had some daylight left... Looks like the weather next weekend will be decent too so hopefully I can get the walls done.

I like your color choice. What are you using to cut the metal? For length, I usually use my 7 1/4 inch saw with an old, dull, framing blade in it backwards. For more detail cuts, I use a 4 1/2 inch grinder with a cut off wheel.

I used to cut sheets of steel like you do Eddie. I got tired of the noise and jagged edges. Now I cut with a simple set of non compound regular tin snips. It's a bit of a pain over the ridges but it's quick and quiet.

Yep, that's me. Circular Saw is way too violent.

yeah, and I read something about it overheating the cut and rusting early... didn't want to deal with that, combination of the manual shears and the nibbler seems to go good across the ribs if you cut the deep one manually it will go over the rest of them. I did buy a metal cutting circular saw blade anticipating its use but I'm more turtle than hare...

The new manual snips are key... I've never used new good snips before, cut like butter and will cut a hair off the edge if you want to! Plus the Milwaukee snips have more of an angle than the normal Wiss so your knuckles are out of the way, and only $34 for the pair of left and right at Home Depot... I think $2 more than the 3 pack of Wiss

Made good progress today, got the gable end wall metal stacked out so it's easier to use and found out I'm short a piece of metal, dangit...

Got the all the sheets up on one end wall, it got dark before I could get done so I had a light out and the wife helping some and while trying to put the third screw into the last piece of metal I fell off the dang ladder... Feet about 5' off the ground, tail bone hit first then back then head... apparently I'm still young enough to bounce back since my tailbone is about all that's sore other than a couple muscles. This happened a few hours ago and I still am not sure how I lost my balance... whatever, the scratch down the side of the metal at least has a story...

Tomorrow I'll finish putting the screws in that last piece of metal and get the top and bottom trim on, and put the bottom trim on the first wall I did last weekend and probably the one corner trim I can do. I haven't been able to get the window trim since the company that does the metal was closed for the smoke...

I think I'm going to buy some new snips and will look at the Milwaukee ones this week. I'm waiting on my metal order for a porch that I just built for a client, and then I have another porch to build next month. If they cut as nice as you say, that would make life a lot nicer then dealing with the saw blade, or grinder.

Woke up better than when I went to bed! Still can't lift my left leg more than 6", some thigh muscle is mad, not bad, all sorts of bad scenario's ran through my head as I was falling, this isn't bad, task failed successfully!

I like the snips enough that I just used them to cut the angle across the whole end wall instead of firing up the compressor to use the nibbler, I think this was faster... and with the extra angle of the blades not one cut knuckle and I wasn't wearing gloves...
