New Puppy NEED help

Ok i got my two daughters two puppies the other day. I got two from the same litter thinking they would be more comfortable. One is calm and very friendly. The other is friendly but will not stop barking, she barks from the moment she wakes up till she goes to sleep. Shes be getting up about 5:30am. What can i do to get her to stop.

they are both females and are 7 weeks old. they both are real playfull and full of energy. the only diff is the barking. they are golden retriever/brown lab mix.

There used to be a shock type bark collar that did well in stopping barking dogs. It was automatic and relatively inexpensive. I'm not sure I would have the heart to put it on a puppy. Did a quick search on the web using "Bark Collar" and got a lot of hits.

Thanks ill check into that. I have had alot of dogs over the years but this is a first for me.

The better made shock collars have adjustable voltage. From a mild shock to a curl the fur shock. The good ones also make a small beeping sound the dogs can hear when the shock is administered. The control has a button that shocks and a button that beeps. After the dog is shocked a couple of times they associate the beep with the shock. Then when the dog barks or high-tails it after a skunk we just hit the beep button. They will stop dead in their tracks. We rarely shock them. The beep is more than enough to stop the barking and other behaviors once the associate the beep with the shock. Sometimes they have to be retaught. We hit the beep button a couple of times and if that doesn't stop them we'll shock them. It will be many months before they ignore the beep after that.

I would not use any type of training collar on a puppy. A training collar should not be used just by chance you don't have time to actually work with the animal. To some extent, asking how to stop a puppy from barking is like asking how to stop a baby from crying. I only hope you had other reasons to get the puppies other than just for your daughters. Have you started crate training yet?

That's what you get for buying junk dogs. Neither labs or goldens are barking breeds. The breeder probably ended up with puppies because he was too lazy or cheap to neuter his dogs, and has no idea who the female mated with. It sounds like the pups are from different sires. Your best bet at this point is just to cull the one that is the yapper. It will probably have more behavior problems as it gets older. Next time, go to a reputable breeder, so you know in advance what you are getting.

Isn't that pretty much the main reason most people get pets? for their kids? that is why I got two of our dogs and our cat.( I bought the English Bulldog for me though, I just like them) Although the dogs do come in handy on the farm.

From my own experience, out of a little over 50 dogs, perhaps 6 were for "just for the children". Chances are the child isn't going to actually take care of the pet, nor train it (in some cases yes). Don't get me wrong, a pet is a wonderful opportunity to show a child responsibility, however, you need to plan accordingly. People always tend to want puppies which is fine, but a puppy usually takes more responsibility than an older dog (assuming the older dog has some training). You'd be surprised how many parents don't realize that a large (50lb plus) energetic dog sometimes does not "work well" with very small children who are very young. You'd also probably be surprised how many people are surprised that their children don't want to take the time to work with an animal, but only "play" with it. Some other reasons people actually get animals... 1. Companionship for themselves 2. Companionship for their other animals 3. Working breed 4. Agility training

I agree Sig. I have two Shepard/Lab mixes AKA mutts, as outside farm dogs and they are by far the best dogs I have ever owned. They guard my house and property with a fiecre loyalty that you can't teach. they are sharp as a tack and very gentle with my kids and will protect them with their life.

My $3,700 full blooded English Bulldog that is sired by a 3 time champion on the otherhand is as dumb as a box of rocks ( although we still love her) and is a flat out coward when it comes to guarding my home. She will run in her kennel anytime she hears something suspicious. She is great with the kids though.
