Not sure how my Boyscout comment ended up on this thread.

Kills me that the modern way of thinking is all about "Educating" the masses. I believe that THINKING is a learned and practiced undertaking. If people could do that, so much "simple" Education would not be necessary. I really wonder how so many people make it through life. Sure, as long as they are mindless consumers and pay their taxes, maybe that's all that matters.

I agree on need for reeducation of clueless mergers.
You and I will never agree on the rest, but that's OK. The day that we aren't free to express our viewpoints on a subject is the day that I leave.

I think that "autosave" does that sometimes.

Maybe boyscouts will soon have a merging merit badge?? Lol

I'm glad they are replacing "merge" signs with "take turns" signs, but people still dont follow them.

Maybe Transgender Lanes. Would not surprise me in this Province!

I do not see why it needs to be complicated if everyone does what they should be doing. I'm in right hand lane, car, truck, bus, plane wants to merge, they can do it AFTER I pass, IF there is room and time to get into the right hand lane. If there isn't time, HP, or skill set to merge, stay home.

The make everyone move left is ridiculous, and isn't about courtesy. People don't know how to drive to begin with - everyone moving a lane left so a on ramp vehicle can enter traffic is unnecessary and just plain dumb. Each lane holds their lane, merging traffic merges as an opening allows. If there is no opening wait until there is one. End of story, case closed. Problem solved. Next case!:confused3:

I can see a point buried in there, I think!

Often I see people cruising in the right lane at a snails pace all of a sudden jump into the left lane and force all the traffic to hit the brakes because they themselves don't know how to adjust for the traffics pace. Probably why they think there is a need to let those merging onto the road have nan empty lane.

How many have had to Hit the brakes on the highway because some dummy cut into the left lane at 15 to 20 MPH below the traffics pace just to let someone merge onto the highway, then the two dingbats ( merging car driver and the lane shifter) run side by side for miles on end because they aren't smart enough to separate and let the lane shifter back into the right.

Please remember if the traffic in the lane beside you is traveling faster, then you need to MERGE into it at the speed they are traveling. Not just jump in and slow everything down because you want to be nice.

That side by side crap is common on the four lane (non interstate) roads around here. Then when someone starts honking at the idiots to quit lollygagging, they act surprised and start pointing at a speed limit sign.

I have people match speed with me when I'm in my service truck. When I slow down, they slow down, when I speed up, they speed up. Usually the truck hugging the yellow line will crowd them enough to where they get a clue and move on.

We have several truck lanes on my way home, with "slower traffic keep right" signs to instruct people how to use them. Too often people think it means "speed up 20 mph so that nobody can get by you; then resume poking along at your casual, 10 below the speed limit pace once the lane ends. Sometimes I feel like I'm the last car in line as the green flag goes down, watching people take off as they approach those hills.

Had someone do that the other day to me as well. Was in the shops f250 diesel which is a rocket though. Couple were sleeping in the hammer lane so I went to go around. As soon as I got even with them, they decided they needed to race.

So I let them go by. Then they proceeded to sleep on the hammer lane again. Cruise was set at 73. They would pass me then I would slowly gain on them again. The second time I went to go by them they sped up. I put the peddle to the floor and went around them. Then proceeded to get stuck behind some slow moving tractor trailers for about 10 miles. As soon as they had an opening, they would try to pass, and I would step on it again and get "stuck" behind a slow moving tractor trailer.

They must have gotten the point. After about 10 miles I let them go by me, and never saw them again on that trip.

Simply said at this point in time I think it would take an act of god to teach people to understand that the left lane isn't thier personal roadway and they need to let traffic past them by moving over. I see it all the time at all speeds the car leading thinks because they are moving slightly faster than those in the right that they are fine when in reality they are holding 100 vehicles at bay that all want past them but cant find the room but are simply not aggressive enough to tighten up on the slow poke enough to scare them, or the person is simply having a wonder full conversation on their phone while they waddle along totally oblivious to the fact they are the one who knows nothing about how to drive when everyone in the back finally gets an opening long enough to get around them I the right lane they look astonished and upset that anyone would dare pass them on the right especially when as it usually is its a tight pass.

Its really simple folks if cars are pilling up behind you and the traffic in front of you is pulling away get out of the left lane and let everyone pass!

/ New law I missed??? Merging traffic? #111
What annoys me even more then that, is that often when they do finally move over, you go to pass, and try and give them "a look" or even shake your head, and they don't even look at you. It's quite obvious, that they are totally oblivious to their surroundings and oh so obvious that they really need some physical road rage imposed upon them!

If the police spent more time giving traffic tickets to people who are actually doing dangerous things, and a little less citing people for going 10 MPH over the speed limit when there is no traffic and no hazard, I think our roads would be much safer. How many people do you know who habitually tail-gate, don't use their turn signals, etc. and how many of those have EVER been stopped and cited for those things? The problem with peoples' unsafe driving habits is the police doing a bad job of enforcing the laws IMO.

Having been on both sides I completely agree.

Oh, they aren't oblivious. They know what they did, so are avoiding your stare.

/ New law I missed??? Merging traffic? #114
Oh, the stare. Lol

Half the time they are probably the ones that should do the staring, back at an impatient person who thinks the road is only for them..

Actually I would bet that the ones holding traffic back by blocking the left lane are wrong more than 98% of the time.

Yesterday on my way home some bozo held up traffic for over 23 miles. I couldn't count all the cars that flew by when we finally got the chance but like in most cases when the majority of the traffic works so hard at getting by you when you finally decide to move over it becomes clear the left lane wasn't built for you to lollygag in!
Again I was only a few cars back when he cut out into the left and just as almost every time I see it happen he was traveling slower than the traffic in the left lane and was being passed by an uncountable amount of cars when he came upon someone going just about 1 MPH slower than he and instead of accelerating into the left lane to attain the speed needed for the flow of traffic, he simply forced his way out in the first hole big enough to fit causing almost 15 cars (that I could count) to hit the brakes in order to slow to his lower speed. Then as always he didn't speed up at all and simply stayed in that traffics way for the next 23 miles of which he barely passed 4 cars and one tractor trailer.
As always the slow poke who thinks they own the road, blames everyone else and thinks everyone else is impatient simply kept looking away as everyone passed him with the Stare!
Since reading this post had my mind thinking a little about this I got into the right lane and held back to watch this Idiot for a while from the mirror as I couldn't stand to be behind him. Sure enough about 2 miles later he got out into the left lane again and within a few moments time he had built up an new train of traffic behind him as he once again decided he owned the road and he was going to cruise in the passing lane. This time I was in the right lane with the cruise control on and set just below the speed limit and for the last 10 miles of my trip he never got past my rear bumper.

Allowing someone from the merge lane while they are going slower than you is very frustrating because that means you need to slow down to allow them in. I hate that scenario because quite often it seems they take forever to get up to speed.

I am sympathetic to those in the right lane when I try to merge into traffic. What I try to do is go faster than those in the right lane, like hammer down faster. Then slow down to find a hole. When the eight, center and left lane are congested, if you are not aggressive you will come to a stop. Then you are screwed.

People seem to allow a faster car into traffic from the right even if it means slowing a little bit. Maybe to get away from that crazy driver.

Sounds like our southern border problem. Opps.. off track..... back to merging traffic... :censored:

I believe that's how it's supposed to work. Here's Texas law, et.al. on merging;
"Section 545.061 of the Texas transportation code states that (on a roadway divided into three or more lanes providing for one-way traffic) a driver must yield to traffic on the left when entering a lane from the right. This statute applies to lane changes as well as vehicles entering the roadway.

Some drivers let those entering the freeway have right of way by moving over to another lane so that they can merge safely. Whle drivers on the highway are not required to yield or move over, this is usually done out of courtesy and to avoid an unnecessary collision.

When youæ±*e merging into traffic, you need to pay attention to your speed in order to avoid disrupting traffic. For example, you should enter the freeway ramp and immediately start accelerating so you can match the speed of highway traffic. You should find an acceptable balance where youæ±*e neither going too fast nor too slow to avoid confusing other drivers."
