New House Build

I built all my kitchen cabinets for my house. Someone suggested to me I should go into the cabinet making business. I said no, no one could afford what I would have to charge to come out even.

Determining and meeting expectations can be challenging. The pull out trash drawer should have been specified as a pull out. I’ve seen them both ways.
Inside of doors I would have expected finished, but I did not finish the drawers themselves.

When we had our previous cabinets made a woman helped us with design and features. Many questions and discussions.

Karrie never asked many questions beyond wood type and hardware. In hindsight that should have alerted us. He built what he knew how to build. We are expected to be comtent with that. We should have looked at a couple of his previous builds.

I think Karrie's design using doors and then roll out drawers is based on cabinet front appearance rather than practicality.

Terry is content with them so I am too. Just as she is content with my shop design. :)

Over: it looks like it took you just over a year to get your home built to this point. after I read more about your build I'll probably just say WELL DONE or if i see something that might improve your life i'll let you know.

looks good so far and just wanted to mark your thread to read it later.

Richard, just wanted to say thanks for you posting all of this. Well documented and interesting, and even more interesting to me as I'm nearing retirement and we are trying to come up with a plan for a new shop and house on our 9 acres.

We had our current home built in 1989, and 30x50 shop, red iron frame metal building in 1996.
A lot has changed since then considering building materials, and PRICES!!!!
Wish more folks would elaborate as well as you did with your build.

Appreciate it

Thanks for the compliments.

I really thought I could get the house built for $100 p/sqft. Once we had the shop done I realized that wasn't going to happen. I didn't want to cut costs on items that are used every day such as doors, windows, insulation, etc. That drove our costs up some.

Thanks again for your support.
