Ah, but whenthe thread gets really "off topic", it's nice to know it too. Perhaps we could do a 2-line subject. First line would be unchangeable to remind everyone what the original thread was, and the second line to indicate what it's transmogrified into. That could make listings really long, unless the sub-subject was in smaller type...

Last time we discussed this I was voting for an unchangeable subject field, and I still do, but GlueGuy has a point about the reality of the wandering topic phenomenon. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Maybe a subject field that you could only add to in replies, or a "sub-subject", as GlueGuy suggests.

Or maybe this is just another you-can't-please-all-the-people-all-the-time issue. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

How about a best of both worlds...

When a user changes a subject line in mid-stream {like I often do ... well because the subject changes... that's why /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif}..

It can be displayed on "two lines" under Messages Posted in the Past xx Hours such as:

<pre>Subject
Never idle a diesel??..
Avoid Idling A Diesel Engine... </pre>

This allows the viewer to see the original Subject, and also sub-subject... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The new forums are great...

One thing I'd like to see... In the "View Recent Messages" area, it would be great to have a "threaded" view. So, when you click on "Past 12 Hours", you would get a list of each thread with new posts in the last 12 hours.

Maybe something like:

Thread___________________Forum___________New Posts__Last Post On________Open Flat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Branson on ebay___________Other Brands_____ 3_________12/06/01 10:19 AM___<flat>
New Forums & Restructuring_Forum Feedback___5_________12/06/01 10:18 AM___<flat>

<flat> would be a button that opens that thread in flat mode (preferably at the location of the first new post).

Right now, I find myself searching through a huge list of new posts, clicking on one on want to read, then, immediately clicking on "flat" viewing, and then finally reading that posts and other new ones in the thread...

Ditto! Unchangeable topics!!! Sure helps when you are reading by "Last Hour" etc. Don't know how many times have selected a message only to find out it is a subset of something I didn't care to read about.

Ditto, again, on the unchangeable topics! Its kinda confusing when looking for a particular thread(s) in the last 12 hours and don't see any new posts related to the thread. If the topic changes then it should be a new post.

Dave... I agree... but it never happens and we all seem to just go with the flow...

That's why a sub-subject attached to the main subject would be more logical...

People can see how it started, where it went, where it's going...etc. vs. clicking on a hot subject like Oil Changes... and instead see a nude babe taking a body oil bath... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
