It's just a matter of time before you won't be able to have wood burners, stoves, or fireplaces in many parts of the country.

Thanks Aaron,, I won't be doing that anytime soon...they can put me in the big house..I will stick with my burn barrel and roll the dice with my hot dogs on a stick...

Imagine what it would cost to have a dozier or back hoe come over and dig a pit like that and construct it as required ? just for an average farm or homeowner...it is stupid..how PC is that ?

I have fires as long as it's at least October but before May and not dry. As RobertN mentioned, we have to deal with "burn days" and "not burn days" for the air quality management district however...

... and it was mentioned in post #1...

... I keep a tripod and some dutch ovens at the fire. The heck with hot dogs, cooking a full dinner for a group is better. I work all day making the coals then friends come up and we can have dinner and a good time by the coals.

I've always thought it the "rule" but never got tested until two years ago. CDF arrived at one of my bonfires and said "Phil, we knew it was you and would've ignored the call but the battalion chief was sitting there when the call came over the speaker and HE knew it wasn't a burn day by AQMD's rules. And he'll be here shortly."

They saw the tripod and dutch ovens and were relieved. When the battalion chief got there, he saw the equipment and said "... great! A cooking fire! Keep up the good work! (clearing underbrush)".

There wasn't any food in the ovens yet, but I told 'em to come back in a few hours as there was enough for all.

I believe (and the rules in the early posts agree) that a "warming fire" (recreational) is also allowed in addition to a "cooking fire". I've always felt "warming fire" would be pushing the limits but it SHOULD be just as legal.

Phil

hmm, no such rules here in north idaho...yet. Then again i chip my branches and trash wood so i guess it wouldnt matter much. We have a trash area about 3 miles away with county maintained trash bins for household trash.

Wouldn't a chainsaw and a chipper take care of all that, without risking a fire?

Only if the chipper has a compliant diesel power plant... older diesel chippers have been banned...

Also, wood burning here is banned on the coldest winter nights.

There is so much free oak just for the taking because folks have to pay to have it hauled off.

I think the Christmas Fire has been banned at least the last 7 or 8 years...

I am going to predict it will only be a matter time where there will be new EPA regulations outlawing burning wood in fireplaces..I am going to predict they will only allow gas logs...looks like that is where we are headed and it will hurt a lot of folks who depend on wood burning stoves and fireplaces for their heat and even some for their cooking.

Oregon has passed a law that requires non-EPA certified wood burning appliances to be removed and destroyed when a house is sold. Installing an EPA certified appliance is OK.

It doesn't bother me much, because this is my toes up home, but it's another $2500 expense to load onto home sale costs. My BIL installed a new insert with a reburn chamber, and I have to say it's a good unit. I still like my old Fisher with the 24" deep firebox. It's a lot less cutting to make a cord.

In the Bay Area, even having the latest EPA wood stove, installed with permits and tax credits does not mean you will be able to fire it up on a cold winter night...

There are actually roving teams of smoke inspectors and hot lines set-up to report violators during the winter months...

In the 70's people were scrambling for firewood and now oak, even cut and delivered free goes to the dump...

Two years ago, a windstorm did a number on a large amount of the Oaks on my land... I cut it all in 16" lengths and tossed it in my trailer... put up a Free Firewood delivered at the Hospital where I work and not a single taker... a few even scolded me for not being environmentally conscious

That is so sad it makes me sick...between the environmentalists and the PC police I just don't see much of a future for our country...

I use to think it was just a California thing... now my thinking has changed because so much of what starts here eventually goes nationwide... it might take 15 or 20 years.

There isn't an aspect of living that someone doesn't want to control... at least this is my view.
