New Burning rules in our County...to conform to EPA rules

Anyone know why burn barrels are illegal?

I got two with my place and they work great...

Theyre used alot to burn garbage would be my guess. Rather than having to check if a person is burning garbage or wood, they just banned them outright.

I know this is a stretch...

China Consolidates Grip on Rare Earths ? Midas Letter

Part of the reason the EPA justifies it's stance on phasing out older power plants is the mandatory move to fluorescent lighting to offset the reduction in grid capacity.

Today, in the paper is an extensive story on China stopping the export of "Rare Earths" used to manufacture these lamps and a lot more...

So first, the U.S. phases out the old reliable low polluting incandescent and makes us dependant on China for the replacement and now China's action cause the price to spike...

The story said is is the equivalent of a $2 cup of coffee 12 months ago now costing $24.55...

OK... thanks for the explanation... I know the ones I "Inherited" were mostly used to burn old pine needles... but I'm sure they would work great for anything burnable.

Look how confusing that is...the way I read it almost no one will be able to burn since you have to be 1,000 feet from any occupied structure

Slow down and read more carefully, and you'll see that ONLY applies when you're using fire to clear land. (Item 11)

The rules really aren't that confusing unless you don't pay close attention

As was said, it probably has to do with household garbage burning. Take a couple bags out back, start them on fire, and walk away.

Here is a brief "Do's and Dont's" from Island countys' website.

GENERAL OUTDOOR BURNING RULES
Applies to all Types of Burning (WAC 173-425)

What can be burned? It is only legal to burn natural vegetation or firewood – not even paper is allowed, except for the amount necessary to start a fire.
Burn Barrels – the use of burn barrels is prohibited statewide.
Construction and demolition debris - No material resulting from a construction, renovation or demolition project can legally be burned.
Nuisance – Smoke, odor or ash that unreasonably impacts neighboring properties is prohibited.
It is illegal to burn any material that is not generated on site or is hauled from an area where burning of the materials is prohibited.
Commercial businesses – Burning at permanently located commercial establishments is prohibited except for land-clearing operations where burning is allowed.
Burning is allowed during daylight hours only (except recreational fires) unless otherwise permitted by the Fire Warden.
Do not burn during periods of air stagnation.
Burn only when winds do not exceed 7-10 mph.
Most types of burning are not allowed during a burn ban

YOU MAY BE CHARGED A FEE IF YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT IS CALLED OUT TO YOUR FIRE DUE TO ILLEGAL BURNING.

YUP, what you call the west coast we here call the left coast. They dont care what their regs do to the average joe trying to get by.

I looks like it has already spread... California EPA more stringent emission rules have been adopted, at least in part, by New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Maine.

Must be a strategy of working from the outside to the middle incrementally.

Well the only time were usually sucked into a California type law is when it involves modifications to equipment (like auto exhaust) that the manufacturers don't want to make 2 different kinds to satisfy Calif and to satisfy the rest of the country.

Our burn laws are actually getting less restrictive. For the past 16 years we have had to pay $5.00 for a 12 months burn permit and then call the local fire department prior to any planned burning. This year they cut out the $5.00 fee and we don't have to report planned burning. We can burn anytime as long as a weather related burn ban isn't in effect, and these are posted on fire dept reader board and online.

Sun Valley and the are around was where most headed...

I've only been in your beautiful State briefly on 3 ocasions... Spring, Summer and Fall.

Take a look below at the new rules for burning any debris in our country..now we can not even burn vegetative matter caused by storm damage even in a burn barrel...this will mean folks will just pile up the branches, and trees on their property and create an eye sore and fire hazzard...the cost to hire a roll off or dump truck along with land fill fees would be prohibitive..The county does not pick up any downed trees or branches ...Go Figure...there is just no common sense anymore. Can't even use welders , blow torches..etc .

Here is a follow up to show that our county now has to conform to new EPA regulations and effective 01-01-2012 the only thing we can burn from Oct to May is Leaves....that's it...just leaves. So what are we to do with all the trees, limbs and debris that come down after storms ? A roll off runs $250 for a 20 yd. container...most folks won't spend that ..so our county will become a giant fire hazard with limbs and trees left laying in the woods and on peoples property....Here is the rule ...I pasted below from me obtaining burn permit for this AM....we have until the end of the year and these rules take effect.
______________

Burn Restrictions:
**** Today October 2, 2011 Winds predicted NW 16 mph, humidity 28%. **Please use caution.****Permits for all natural debris from your property will be issued from October 1, 2011 until 12/31/11 - weather permitting.*** Natural debris consists of leaves, pine straw and limbs only.
The Director of the EPD is not implementing the more stringent burning restrictions in Walton County until 1/1/12. As of January 1, 2012 the increased restrictions will take effect and permits will be issued for the burning of LEAVES ONLY. Burning of any other natural debris from your property starting on 1/1/12 will no longer be allowed in Walton County. The EPD guidelines prohibit burning in counties with a population of more than 65,000 people. The last census information has the Walton County population over 80,000 people.
Further information can be found at Welcome - Georgia Air Protection Branch --- Select "air quality rules" on left side of the page, then "issued air quality rules", finally "open burning rules".
When burning someone must be in attendance of the fire at all times and have a means of keeping the fire contained at all times. Fires must be completely out by sundown. *Noncompliance voids permit.* Burning anything other than natural debris from your property voids your permit. YOU are responsible for your fire and the smoke it produces, ensure that your fire does not escape and that the smoke is not a nuisance.
Print out or save to desktop your permit and have it on hand if you are checked by county or Georgia Forestry personnel. Walton County will be under the EPD burn ban from May 1 through September 30,
