Yanmar 1610D
Hi all,

Just picked up a new to me 1610D and have a few questions. First tractor and first diesel so I don't want to screw it up. I have managed to figure out what everything does without killing myself so good start. Should have bought this a year ago when I moved. I hope to never use a shovel and wheelbarrow again!

I have already changed the engine oil and filter, dumped the transmission fluid (there was barely any) and cleaned the screen. Haven't found any issues yet.

First question is about the starting procedure. Is there one? I'm assuming it has glow plugs(do I need to warm them up before engaging the starter?) Mine seems to like about 1/4 throttle to start then more throttle for a minute to warm up.

Second question is about the engine stop lever under the steering wheel. Should I use it vs pushing the throttle all the way forward? When I push my throttle all the way forward the engine dies. Normal?

Finally, is there an advantage to using the foot throttle vs the hand throttle? I see that they are tied together but not sure I understand why they are both there.

Nice looking tractor! - Find a manual for it if you don't have one. I never use my foot throttle, Just there for an extra burst if you need it. The hand throttle does all of the work. Run the tractor with a bit more power (RPM) to get work done. You don't want the engine lugging down. A tractor beats hand work! - Nice tiller.
-air filter, hydraulic filter? - I don't know Yanmars other than they have a good reputation.

Sweet looking tractor! I just bought my first and it's a Yanmar too so we'll be on the journey together. I've used tractors for my day job for quite some time, though, and I've always thought that driving with the foot throttle is a bad habit you don't want to pick up. Don't ask me why. As tcreeley says it's there for quick bursts if the top of the hill is a little steeper than the bottom, etc.

Yours looks more well cared for than mine, but think about a radiator flush too. Shouldn't be too difficult and I've gotten good advice on my thread on the best practices.

Congrats!

Welcome to the forum. :welcome:

It doesn't have glow plugs. It has a thermostart element. Read here. Inside a Yanmar thermostart (glow plug) unit.

It would be normal to kill your engine by pushing the throttle all the way forward. I believe the lever under the steering wheel is the decompression lever. It should not be used to kill your engine. When you use the lever it holds your exhaust valve open just a tad so no compression is developed. This is to allow a fast spin for cranking, especially in cold weather. Your starting procedure is fine. Might want to try use the compression release on cold starts. Some hold the compression release long enough for the oil pressure light to go off, a tractor in good shape might go off in 2-4 seconds.

Now I use my foot throttle all the time. Esp with the FM.. Since I don't have power shift. And I finally a couple Yrs. back have my 2nd gear PTO working and staying locked into gear so I don't have a problem in waiting for the Mower to slow down so I'm able to shift even with using a overrun clutch. First gear PTO I run about 2000-2200 Eng. RPM's. so I just use the hand throttle. But almost impossible to stop and shift Quickly. But in 2nd. gear PTO I only run between 1500-1700 Eng. RPM's. and it enables me to stop and shift real quick with very little wait.;)

Thank you. Interesting stuff on the glow plug issue.

I think my tiller is a little big for the tractor but I'll try it again once we are actually in tilling weather. Tried it out once and all I was doing was chruning mud and bogging the poor thing.

I think this thing was probably fresh off the boat because the paint is way too nice and the oil filter was painted on. Seems to function fine so fingers are crossed.

I didn't do the air filter yet. Forgot the number when I was at the store so it will be soon. I cleaned the hydraulic screen but it was very clean already. Not sure I have a filter too?

Forgot. This is the lever under the steering wheel. I believe you are correct about a decomp. It is connected to a linkage on the valve cover.

Yeah that is a lot of tiller. I'm 20 HP.@ the PTO and used a RS.1400 and it worked good except in fresh untilled soil and it was rough on it and slow going. But what I bought it for was a garden that was tilled with a walk behind. My soil is rock hard Ga. clay and if the soil was already tilled or broke it worked really good. This is the first turn of the year and the tiller is buried to the max. It won't go no lower and the pic. shows the results. With new tines of course and no Blk smoke. Yours looks in much better condition.

If you find it starts easier with more throttle give it more throttle. The manual says start at full throttle, then dial it back.

Changed my oil yesterday evening. It's that time to start getting everything ready for use for the next 7months of mowing in Ga.. I put a mark on my Hood which corresponds to 1500 RPMS. I just don't feel right having to open the throttle wide open. I believe it maybe some sort of typo? It's been sitting since Oct. and had to wait a count or two longer for the oil light to go out and BAM!!! hit like it was new. I believe mine was fresh off the Boat also. I actually cranked it up for Clemsonfor and he commented on how well it started cold. So if that is true it maybe a good thing.

If it cranks good at low throttle then I think you should crank it at low throttle.

Might consider taking some tines off your tiller if it is to much for it.

One more question. My 3 point works great. It looks like if I pull past the "up" section I can lock it in the up position. I have been putting the lever back in the neutral section of its range but can see how that could get ugly if I accidentally pushed it down.

Is it standard to "lock" it in that up position? Does locking it up affect the pump at all?

Not sure I am understanding. Are you asking about the round valve handle right under and between your legs? That does lock the lift in whatever position it is in. I'm sure that feature is used differently from one person to another. I rarely if ever use it. When your tractor is parked out of use the lift should be lowered for safety.

Different models plumbing varies. My old 2002D had a relief valve that would relieve if you had the lock valve closed and then attempted to raise the lift. However, I think there are some models that don't work that way and pumps have been destroyed. I do not know about the 1610.

I think yours is fresh off the Recon Boat. Also it should not die if throttle is wide open.

And if it had that little oil in it it's possible that was just enough oil to ship it and move it around, but too little oil and all those axle and gear bearings will be dry!! Look for a leak but i suspect there possibly shipped with a gallon or two to be cheap.

How many hours on it...16 or 19ish??;-)

/ New 1610D owner questions #15
- off the boat- assume it is dry shipped and greases and lube, oil change, hydo change etc, axle too! Nice tractor! - Same for tiller- assume dry shipped.

/ New 1610D owner questions #16
Plus that third world oil they use and ship it with, NO WAY I would put any time, esp under load on that stuff.

/ New 1610D owner questions #17
Rear Axle is lubed with the same oil as the hydro, front axle if 4wd is its own oil.

/ New 1610D owner questions #18
I used 15w40 for the first 50 hrs of use and switched to Rotella T6 5w40. Hydro and rear axle is the same like Clemsonfor said. Use a JD 303 hydro oil for that and front axle you should use 90wt gear lube. I use the foot throttle a lot of the time unless I'm pulling a trailer more than a few feet or tilling, then I use the hand throttle. Nice looking tractor by the way!

It has 250+ hours so they either didn't reset the clock or it may not have have been fresh off the boat after all. Either way I am going over the whole thing before putting it to much use. It does have some paint chips and wear so it has seen some use since it was painted.

Nice tractor!

That's the Decompression lever beneath the steering wheel. That Engine Stop decal on there doesn't belong there.

I've never seen a loader like that before. Brand name? Does it have a sub-structure to carry stresses to the rear axle when you ram into something?
