Neighbor is Not Happy With Me

This guy may have some of the same attitude that I have. This guy was wrong, but here is an angle that may give you some understanding. He doesn't like change. Where I live is where I grew up. I bought 16 acres of land that has been in our family since 1857. Our county is adjacent to a county that is growing by leaps and bounds. People from that area come to our part of our county for the country life. Only they want pizza joints, banks, etc in the neighborhood. Developers are sucking up the farm land and subdividing. When I got back from Iraq 4 months ago there was a new subdivision going in about 300 yards from my house. There will be 175 "budget priced" houses in the subdivision. The houses are about 5 ft apart. I had "words" with the sales lady that was putting up signs for the development along my frontage. She explained to me that they were on the right of way and that she could do it. I explained to her that it was still my property and that those signs would disappear as soon as she was out of sight.

Your neighbor is accustomed to being out there by himself and sees things changing and he doesn't like it. Show him your a good neighbor and he will come around. I sure wish that I had a neighbor like you instead of the ones that are coming. Of course the "anti subdivision" signs I have been putting up have been getting my message out.

Take care and by the way, I have donkeys too.

Hanyrm, did you ask around the neighborhood to see if the guy asked anybody how to situate HIS house before he broke ground? Sounds like the fellow in a neighboring town. He took a partition around to keep out a new developement. When he asked an Amishman to sign it, the Amishman said "You're too late, I wanted to sign it before you built here".

Sorry to hear about your new neighbors. This "next", "adjacent", "close by", issue really boils me. I see it around here too. Counties just don't have the foresight or monies to fight rezoning issues. heck, in one county during the boom times it was the farmers and large lot owners themselves fighting rezoning issues. Sensible issues, like buffers and easements need to be clearly understood and on the books so that infringement and development is controlled in a "smart" way.

You hear it all too often, where a piece of land is divided up, and the adjacent parcel comes under stress, because there are no buffers for development.

I'd say now is a good time to approach one's local government for sensible zoning controls. When the boom times return, it will be dominios all over again.

Good luck with your issue, Brent.

Most communities have zoning laws and most country property is zoned agricultural, rural, etc. When the developers start coming in, the first thing they do is try to get the zoning changed to one that allows subdivisions with small lots. This is when you must start your fight against the subdivisions. A developer bought 120 acres close to me a few years ago with plans of having it rezoned and building 500 small homes on the property. I helped start a civic association in the neighborhood and we went to all the planning board meetings and council meeting concerning this zoning change and got it stopped. The next year they fought for another rezoning with a different zoning to allow 350 homes to be built. We fought them and won again. Now they are planning on building an 80 acre lake with 65 upscale homes in a gated community around it. If they meet our drainage requirements, we will support this plan.

The only problem that you can have in this situation is if the majority of your neighbors want the rezoning so that they can sell their land for inflated prices to the developers and move on. The majority rules in most of these cases.
