WOW, thanks soundguy, for the detailed info, part numbers and all...

As to the older red ones, even if what I have is older, you'd think there would be some evidence of the re-paint work... I'll look closely, but I think I have one of the later ones. I need to look up the numbers on the tractor, see what year it is... I found a list of how to read them by searching here somewhere...

I took my exhaust pipe off at the end of the manifold... it's rusted out in the bend it makes to go up to the muffler. Looks like I'll need a new gasket at the flange from the manifold to the pipe... I'm gonna re-route the pipe down and under the tractor, I will be brush hogging under low hanging branches when I do get the ol' beast working good... no exhaust coming out of the hood will be better... have to find a muffler also...

I finaly got the numbers from the bellhousing by the starter, on the left side of the tractor.

61107-5-D
and just below it is
(diamond) 21696 (I think another diamond)

On the motor it's self, middle of the block, by the water jacket drain, is this:

C3NN-6015-0
and below, faintly, on a cast/raised place, suppost to look like a tag and screw heads, reads as below, without spaces:
3 8 or B 2 0

on the back, under the seat, on what I guess is the hyd lift system, are some numbers, but the valve block for the wet lines to the rear cover part of the numbers... however, what i can see is this:

NNA857-E
and farther across, more faintly, is O. l. 3.

any info would be awesome.... thank you in advance...

Brought my 6600 manual home instead of my 6000 by mistake.

will try to get those numbers tracked down for you anyway this weekend.

The former owner also told me he thought it was a 1964 model year tractor...

How does the SOS trans fit into that, as in, what year did they stop making the junky one? I was under the impression that the later-model year tractors were fairly reliable, but sold poorly due to a ruined reputation...?

Otherwise, I can most likely fix the other issues... hyd system, exhaust system... and from what I've been told it seems to be working smoothly, according to the former owner. Myself, I've drivein it all of about 150 feet the one time I've had it running about a month ago...

Soundguy, thanks for takin' the time to look up stuff for me... I'm courious what kind of info you'll have access to...

Reliable generally wasn't an often used term with ANY of the SOS trannies. "Dependable to a point as long as you took extremely good care and held to a strict maintenance program" was more the story line. Part of the issues the 6000 SOS had was they were at the upper end of the horsepower scale for 1960's SOS technology to deal with. Even the "good ones" had their troubles when used hard. Way back when the 6000 was still a new tractor, the biggest, newest tractor on the farm was almost always the primary tillage machine. Most 6000's generally weren't bought for light duty chores. 6000 SOS's weren't the hot set-up for that sort of use at the hands of MOST people. They could handle the job, IF....if every preventative maintenance step was followed and done correctly, and they weren't ABUSED. When an SOS works, they work so easily that people tend to think "out of sight-out of mind" as far as maintenance. Also, most early SOS buyers were pre-conditioned with years of "gear" technology where an oil change every 20 years or so, need it or not, was good enough.

A neighbor of mine has a 4000 SU SOS with over 7000 hours and NO tranny issues. (And I would give my eye teeth for.) They can be made to hold up. When they do, it makes for one VERY handy tractor. When you get one that's been improperly cared for (ie NOT cared for) you have a rolling money pit.

Thanks for your input, FWJ...

So what would be the recomended maintnance schdule? What kind of things need to be done to keep this ol' critter goin'?

I doubt I'll ever use this tractor "heavily", just need to be able to do some brush hoggin', and pick-pole to lift/move my junk truck collection around... maybe some grader blade work from time to time to keep the road up... don't think it's ever gonna pull a plow... might use it in the hayfield sometimes... might look into a FEL at some point...

Clean oil and filters.

Owning the insert from the manual that involves the care and feeding and diagnostic info will be usefull ( you will need to make adjustments when you check servo's and clutches.. etc.. ), as well as a set of gauges so you can check pressure onthe servo's.

All of the original red 6000's were recalled and "fixed" and when done they were returned painted blue so there "shouldn't" be any red 6000's left but we know how recalls go:rolleyes:

Good luck with your tractor. Regardless of their history they are a unique tractor that I would love to own some day.

Hey Bob...I have a Ford 6000 here in Forestville....it is a fun tractor to pull...took it to Stockton last summer as well as South Dayton...won the 9000, 9500 and 10,500 class
