If using a 4 in cyl, with 2 in shaft, and 2000 psi, the push force will be about 12.5 T.

Using 4.4 GPM,

Extend speed = 18.14 sec
retract speed = 13.33 sec
Total cycle time = 31.79 sec

If using the fast extend valve, the cycle times will be.

Extend 2.857 sec
Retract = 13.33 sec
Total cycle time - 16.18 sec

Has anyone ask themselves why the cyl manufacturers don't make a log splitter cyl with a larger shaft. It would speed the retract time, and decrease the retract force about 3.1 T

For instance,

4 in cyl, 2 in shaft, 10 GPM

Extend speed 7.74
Retract speed = 5.85
Total cycle time = 13.59 sec

4 in cyl, 3 in shaft

Extend = 7.74 sec
Retract = 3.42 sec
Total cycle time = 11.16 sec

I have always wondered about that myself.

You dont need much force retracting. And that is what I seem to wait on the most. I usually have the next peice ready and waiting for the ram to get out of the way.

I have often though I would build one if I could get my hands on such a cylinder. I know some heavy-equipment cylinders have oversized rods.

Example: The Ford 4500 BH bucket cylinder is a 3.5" cylinder with a 3" rod diameter:D It would be nice if I could find one like that in a 4" or 4.5" at a good price.:thumbsup:

PhysAssist,

Have you even read this thread?

PhysAssist,

Since that Heath kit splitter is pretty old, and the engine is probably bad, I would recommend going with a new 3pt splitter and using the fast extend valve. Either keep or sell the valve on the 3pt, and replace it with the Prince LSR 3060.

JJ,

I appreciate your time and advice- and I woulda got back to ya sooner, but I needed knee surgery.

I'm doing good now that it's over- so it's time to get the splitter build moving.

Thanks again,

You have clarified my understanding of the situation.
