I hear you gator. I did a lot of research on 3pt backhoes and I agree that the consensus is to get a sub-frame. But, from everything I read, this mostly applies to Category 1 CUT type tractors, not full size tractors like the 5M series.
I talked to my dealer about it today and he said he had seen a 3000 series break in half from using a 3pt hoe and it was a very expensive repair. But he went on to say that I had nothing to worry about with my M tractor and that I could "have at it" pulling out stumps and what not. He said that Deere did not recommend and would not warranty a 3pt hoe used on a 4000 and lower frame size tractor, but went on to say that they they *would* warranty such use on a 5000 and up frame. I suppose I should get that in writing from him.
The 3pt mounting is very substantial on the BH1050 hoe:
