Sandman I am very curious what your steel is going to cost you to build one. I have some information about the trailer i bought last weekend in another post but I will repeat it here. Please forgive me for double posting. I bought what I believe was a dump bed from a dump truck mounted on a trailer. The bed has a tag that says made by HEIL manufacturing and shows it to be a three yard bed. the trailer is single axle but has dual wheels on each side. The axle seems to be a heavy duty axle with the plate over the bearings ( like an axle on a one ton truck. It is a scissor type lift and has the ram and hydraulic pump on it. The pump did not have a motor so I did not get to see the hydraulics work although I was told that they did work. The reason that I am so curious what you are going to have in your steel for your trailer is that I paid 950.00 for the trailer. I believe that I could not buy the steel to build just the trailer and bed for that amount of money. I am curious to see if I was correct on my assumption.

The reason... I already have all the materials, collected from various places over the years. I am a packrat kind of guy and tend to find used or drops of steel and save them till I need them.
Current project, building a set of adapters to allow me to run dual rear wheels on my JD 2555. So far, money out of pocket, none, and they are almost done. I still have to cut some flatbar to add to the center, because I didn't have a piece with a thick enough wall for the center pipe.
For the trailer I plan on using 5" channel, picked up from a local business to build the part of the deck that raises. Since I am planning on only dumping the last 13' of bed, and the rest of the 20' will be stationary, I will have to use it all the way to keep the deck at one height.
I have 3 pieces of 1/4" aluminum that are 13'x3' that will cover the dumping part of the bed, and some of the stationary part, to make it a little lighter. I haven't checked to see if I have enough other stuff to finish the deck off in aluminum, but hopefully I have enough of it, as I really want it to be reasonably light.
The 5" channel was a bonus when I purchased the roller bed from a 53' trailer they were stripping out. The guy put all of it in the scrap bin, and rather than trying to separate it out, I just bought the whole bin's contents.
If I ever post any pictures of my projects, you should notice that all of them carry the same rust color due to me using stuff I have sitting around. Too cheap to pay todays steel prices, but one day I am going to run out of my stash, and then I will be in trouble!

I am not sure what you have all paid but I found this dump trailer for $3900 on craigslist. It was also new!! I went and met this very nice man and found out he was the owner of this trailer buis. He said it was a demo from the show room. I think I got a pretty god deal.

That sounds like a good price for a dump trailer how big is it?
The one that I bought is an old one. Would be nice to have a new one that I did not have to work on.

Sandman I understand that philosophy. i will have something go wrong with a car or motorcycle and my wife will say what is it going to cost to fix and I will say not much I have a spare one of those. We have started buying new cars the last couple of years so I dont have spares for them. They are under warranty though so it dont matter.

I am going to get the trailer saturday and I will try to post some pics of it. I am going to see just how much steel is in the trailer and bed and see what it would cost to buy enough to build that. I will mention one thing David that I am sure you are aware of. Be glad that you dont have to buy steel at todays prices. It is very very expensive.

It is 10'X6' @10'000lbs. 5 cu yds. Although I have had 16,900 -3,000 for the trailer. Axles are 6,000lbs per. More then the rating but I did not realize the weight until I got to the dump and was weighed.
I Weighed 24,900lbs going in to the dump.!!

From what I have read if you got a trailer that big you got a very good price. I have read some of the other posts on TBN that talk about commercial licenses when you get to a certain weight with your truck and trailer. You might want to look into that because you are getting pretty close I think. In arkansas is not a big deal I do not see the polic checking trailers that much. In some states, I have read, They get pretty serious about checking those things. I am curious what kind of vehicle you pull it with

I am not sure of the weight but I do know here in CO. if you have a single rear drive axel you do not need a CDL. My truck is an 06' F350 Powerstroke w/toqureshift crewcab long bed w/factory heavy springs front and rear.

I don't think being in Colorado has much to do with it. Bust the magical number(25,900 and some change) and get caught, you better hope the officer is in a good mood. Doesn't matter if you have a single axle drive, or three drive axles. Once you are over that weight your state's DOT has authority over you, so watch your weight.
