Water pump is a good idea, but idling at 1500 just sitting there it should not be at 230! either head gasket is blown or gauge is wrong.

Oh and 2 or 3 core refers to th rows of tubes in the radiator, from front to back. If you look into the top of the neck of radiator tthrough where the cap screws on. You will see either 2 or 3 rows of holes that go downward in the radiator. Which ever you have is how many cores you have.
Well I'll be damned, Hoye was right. I just drove it around for 30 minutes and didn't drop the RPM's below 2k. Stayed between 175-185 the whole time. Not a single bubble in the overflow bottle and the level in there did not rise at all either this time. I've never rand it that long at all. It clearly doesn't like to be lugged!! If I idle it down, it goes up. I think I am just going to order the water pump and be done with it!

You won't regret installing water pump, mine never gets to 160 degrees no matter how hot the weather. I went thru same thing you did, but I had my radiator rodded out.

Here is a picture. Under the cap is is rubber like I thought. The strainer has a rubber seal under the lip and the Grove is in the top of strainer to let air into the tank.

My theory (and this is only a theory - I am not a scientist) is that you need higher RPMs to pull more air through the radiator to get more temperature differential to get the thermosiphon to work. Not enough air and the water is too close to the same temperature on both sides and the 'siphon' part fails to keep up. Add in 40 years worth of obstructions growing in the block's passages and it just adds to the problem. I might be totally wrong but this is the way it works out in my head.
Lugging seems to be one of the fairly common factors when the thermosiphon tractors overheat. The water pump is a great addition not only because it eliminates overheating problems but also because you don't have to worry about adding antifreeze in the winter to prevent freezing. You can use the same 50/50 all year round. We get lots of calls in the spring because an unexpected cold snap over the winter cracked a block.

Wow, classy. My YM240 doesn't have those notches in its strainer. I assume the YM186 breathes through the gas gauge in its cap. (Because other owners have said rain gets into the tank via the gauge).
Neither tractor has any rubber gaskets, at least not since I've owned them.
