Can you go into a little more detail on this? How's the tach/cable work? What exactly needs to be freed up or sealed?
The underside of your instrument panel looks like this, no?

Unscrew the sleeve around the end of the tach cable, pull the cable out where you can see it, and yank out the core. The core is a small wire rope running inside that sheath. A gear at the lower end spins the core in proportion to engine speed. Inspect, grease, reinstall. Replace if frayed or kinked. All mechanical, there's nothing electronic.

Up in the tach, that tach cable core spins a magnet that pulls the tach needle up higher on the scale proportional to the cable rpm. If your tach is silent, the cable is more likely to be the problem than the tach internals.

It spins. Just like a weed eater flexible driveshaft inside the tube.

What gear do ya'll bush hog in? I was in 2nd low which seemed kinda slow lol.

Then tried 3rd low and ended up going to 1st in high range. Seems like anything faster than that would bounce you all over the **** place.
It depends. With the 5ft bush hog I use 7th gear for normal or 6th if it's thicker. This is H 3 or 2 respectively. You do have 3 less HP than me and ot sounds like it is really tall, but I have never really gone that slow unless I don't know if there is rocks or unknowns or 3 inch trees I am looking for. As for the higher speeds it does bounce you all over and hurts your back after a day of that.

One thing that would make mowing less tiring would be a seat that is well cushioned but can't wobble side to side. That replacement folding seat we saw in a thread recently would be an improvement over the native seat on these.

Responding to several posts back about the vent tube. I am not sure but believe it is 1/8" bpt (british pipe thread). 1 thread per inch different than our 1/8" npt threads. Could probably get the broken piece out with an ez out.

Yeah there is no way. This stuff is THICK and really tall and I have no idea what's hiding in it. Oh well, I'll just take my time.

If I pull the throttle all the way back, isit possible to over rev this thing? Or will that not hurt it?

/ My First Real Tractor! #327
The governor "should be" set so you cannot over rev it. Really no need too, nothing to be gained.

No reason to pull it all the way back. But when your cutting I bet you can have the petal all the way down and only be 2200 to 2400 when your cutting, really thick stuff maybe even 2000

Gotcha, I asked in case my tach goes south. Basically so in case it does I can go full throttle, and then back it off some and get used to the sound there for cutting. Was not wanting to run wide open hahaha, trying to avoid if possible!

If your tach goes out Hoye is there for us. Parts for these old units are actually reasonable. With so many parts units around even the tach can probably be gotten if not availible new. And I am sure the same is true for the cable.
